6758 Compressor Outlet Hose Blowing Off
I recently had a track day and things were going well (as in I was catching and passing people that felt like they shouldn't be passed by a lowly Miata) when the hose on the compressor blew off. It would have been inconsequential if the clamp hadn't "vacated the premises" and I didn't have a spare on-hand. It was a t-bar clamp that was tightened (I thought) enough to withstand my puny 15psi track day boost limit.
So now I'm wondering if I'm missing something, or am I just being wimpy in tightening down that hose? I'm not trying to set the world on fire with boost. I just want to get through a track day without having to carry 2 or 3 spare clamps. |
If you have a 2" outlet pipe then you have 3.1415" sq inch area. 3.1415 x 15psi = 47.1 ft lbs of force trying to push the hose off.
Tighten the clamp stoutly. In a worse case scenario I've used mechanical tie bars to reduce the stress on the couplers... |
you shouldn't need a t-bolt clamp. in fact, I've seen many of them fail, and many of them leak too. uneven clamping, pinching, etc. let's see what it all looks like before a solution is suggested. increasingbrute clamping force is rarely the answer

My engine bay looks like shit and it's cramped in there to get a good pic. I'm going to do some "restorative work" this weekend and I'll post a picture of what I've got (and maybe a a nice little surprise that I'm hoping will solve the problem).
