88 nonturbo RX7 at local pull-a-part

Saw an '88 nonturbo RX-7 at the pull-a-part this morning. Anybody think it'd be worth it to yank the diff assembly, hoping it is an lsd? It'd be $50.

bripab007 03-11-2007 02:34 PM

It's much more involved than "yanking" on the RX-7; it just plain sucks.

It'd only be worth it if you were 100% sure it was a clutch-type LSD.

cant u pull it apart partaly and check this?

<--- knows nothing about lsd's

Atlanta93LE 03-11-2007 02:47 PM

Gotta get it out to pull it apart, I believe

there will be a metal tab on the drain plug that says LSD if it is one.

Tell ya what, IF you pull it, then IF it's an LSD, I'll give you $51 for it. :bigtu:

Atlanta93LE 03-11-2007 08:26 PM

Hmm, well, didn't see any tab like that. So assuming it is is open. Not worth a bother. Thanks guys

Braineack 03-11-2007 08:29 PM

you also wont be able to turn the axles in different directions.

Atlanta93LE 03-11-2007 08:32 PM

That's only true if the clutch discs hadn't worn to shit though. My last experience with a clutch-type (from an Alfa) taught me to never assume an old lsd had any disc left ;)

airbrush1 03-11-2007 11:21 PM

is it a GXL ????? if so it has a LSD.... even if the tab has fallen off or been discarded..... My GXL did not have that tab

Atlanta93LE 03-11-2007 11:23 PM

dunno. I didn't look too closely, as there were some sketch guys pulling the motor while I was looking at it. They said they weren't touching the diff though. I got a quick look underneath, but saw nothing to indicate either way. How would I know if it was a gxl?

Not true, Scott. I was able to turn my clutch-type in opposite directions (albeit with plenty of force) before I rebuilt it.

Braineack 03-11-2007 11:32 PM

just kidding.

airbrush1 03-12-2007 04:18 AM

it should have emblems/stickers indicating it's designation as a gxl.... you could also look at the center console for the adjustable suspension buttons....

other than that.... it's been a while since I owned mine, so I'm not completely sure if there are any nuances I'm fortgetting with the passage of time.......
