91 custom turbo - oil leak

I just fired my Miata up with a custom 14b turbo on it and it smokes and oil comes out of the exhaust! I mean a puddle.I got the turbo on eBay and they claimed it was rebuilt.Could It be anything else other the turbo leaking ??Dave.

puddling of oil out of the exhaust is curious....

few things it could be: no rear seal at all, incredible high amounts of oil pressure, leaking fitting (outside of turbo)

needs more pics....

Don't se any otherleaks other than from exhaust on out.Oil line is from side of engine block direct to turbo.

no rear seal on the turbo=oil dumping straight out the exhaust. pull one of your IC pipes and see if there is oil in them. most oil leaks won't be visible as the turbo/IC system is a sealed setup.

91 oil leak

No intercooler a low boost setup. The intake side is clean as a whistle. This is my first turbo set up so I'm figuring it out as I go.

Sounds like it is, I had this exact same problem, and pulled the CHRA apart only to find it had no seal :crx:

Thanks to all-I'll do some investigating and post my results.

Pull the oil drain pipe off the sump and see how much oil is flowing out of the CHRA. Maybe its not draining nice and forcing oil past shot seals. Otherwise, what they said ^

Yup that was my next test was to make sure the return oil line was an easy flow.Does the oil feed line need some sort of restrictor? I noticed that the orafice has a tiny hole to let oil in and thought that was by design.

Sounds like you are describing the restrictor, but regardless the car would burn oil without proper restriction, not spew out puddles. Betting the seal is crap...:)best of luck

I took the turbo apart(What does CHRA stand for?) and took apart the center rotating assembly. While the shaft has no play I don't see any seals. This is a Mitsubishi 14b and looks as though thseals would be O-rings that go in grooves in the shaft? I don't know any turbo shops in my area(Boston) but would be interested in any info on places to either by a seal kit or even send the center section out for a fix up.Any info would be appreciated.

Thanks to gredymx5 for the link and Braineak for the insightful FAQs---Tough being a newbie!!!

OK--Should have the turbo rebuilt within a week or so.Just to be safe I think I will put a restricter inline for the oil feed.Anyone know where I can get one?

Duckie_uk 07-23-2008 09:40 AM

Pop rivet FTW

m2cupcar 07-23-2008 10:24 AM

I wouldn't put the restrictor in unless you find you need one. Better to over oil first, rather than under oil and find out later.
