Default 97 Montego sr20 t25 Turbo Build

Hi all. I've had a build thread over on CR for a while now, but since I've decided to do a turbo build, I feel that this is a more appropriate place for it. I'm still in the process of sourcing parts for my build, and will be starting to install everything later this summer. I've began talking about the turbo build in post #2.

Since everyone likes pictures, I'll catch you up to where the car sits now with a bunch of pictures.

Bought the car in May of 2012, bone stock with 153k miles on it. Had the timing belt and water pump done right away.

Pretty clean interior

Picked up some 15x7 Kosei K1s painted charcoal and a Jackson Racing catback.

NGK plugs and wires and a Flyin Miata shock tower brace.

Installed some style bars that were laying around from my parent's miata until I got a roll bar

Megan Racing EZ Streets

Found a Hard Dog M2 Sport DD on Craigslist

Padding

First auto-x

Chive on

Ultrashield Rally Sport and harness

RB hollow front bar, 949 end links, all new eccentric bolts

Oh?

That looks better

Some facetime for the WRX

Pads, rotors, and a couple calipers

Support blocks for the RB front bar

New front turns and plasti dipped side markers

Another auto-x. You can watch videos of my runs here if you want: Leach0789's channel - YouTube

So that puts us pretty much up until today. For the turbo build, my goal is to be around 200 whp, or just a bit over. Enough power to make the car decently quick, but not enough to blow everything up

After some research, I decided to go with a T25 from an sr20DET. Pairing that with a Flyin' Miata cast manifold. Those are the only 2 big parts that I've acquired to far. 460cc red top rx7 injectors are in the mail right now - I'll be sending them off to Witch Hunter for cleaning and flow testing when I get them.

As far as more parts I will buying in the near future, I'm looking at Megasquirt PNP2 and a CX racing intercooler.

More updates soon hopefully!!

Nice.

The kosei wheels were 100000000000000% better than the meshies.
Love the WRX.
Good call on the fm log and sr turbo. Simple yet effective.

Clean car.

Thanks. I still kick myself sometimes for selling the Koseis. If the car was a dedicated track car, I definitely would have kept them. But I'm in love with the width and dish of the Enkeis.

The paint is in pretty decent shape, but it does have some really nasty rocker rust. My plan is to have that taken care of with replacement rockers over the winter when the car isn't being driven.

Consider a MS3 Basic from Reverent instead of an MSPNP2 as an option.

Welcome.

Thanks. I didn't see Reverent's thread until just now. I had found a good deal on a PNP2, but I'll send Reverent a PM.

The car is going to be tuned by Matt of Wicked Innovation. He's one of the most reputable tuners in New England, and a friend of mine.

Got my MSPNP2 brand new, as well as 460cc RX7 red top injectors that I will be sending out to Witch Hunter for cleaning.

Hey this is a cool build! I just bought 460's too, plus just got the SR20 brainwave... Don't yell at me if I copy this build too much

What downpour are you planning on? The FM one or are you going custom?

Thanks!

I'm planning to have my shop fab one up for me when it goes in to be tuned.

Ah I see. I'm trying to avoid the whole custom downpipe bit, as there are not many good fab shops locally... looks like I'll just have to keep hunting for a used BEGI/FM downpipe.

I've been slacking on updates!

Picked up an older FMII FMIC setup with the piping

APS BOV

Got my injectors cleaned with great results

Stage 2 Comp Clutch

Making good use of the car this summer!

Did another couple autocrosses as well. The car ran great, and I put down some of my best times so far.

Me and a couple of friends started to tear things down last night. Got the intake out, as well as the header/downpipe/cat/EGR. All of the header nuts came off smoothly (thank god!) I don't have a ton of time left this week to work on the car, so I may take on some of the smaller tasks, like the injectors, or MegaSquirt, as well as cleaning up that nasty engine bay!

Cool update, I love the Kayak transportation! I wish I had pictures of some of the things I've stuffed in my car.

Thanks! It's funny, the kayak was more secure on the Miata, than on my WRX with actual roof racks

Just curious, but why would you recommend the MS3 over the PNP2. I am doing almost this exact build on my 1.6 1990 and I was going to go with the PNP2 mostly for convenience.

They were nice wheels, but had a pretty bad rattle can job done by the PO, and had some rash that he tried to cover up. I had thought about having them professionally powder coated, but I got a killer deal on the Enkeis that I couldn't pass up.

Looks like those cleaned up well for you!

Try Goodwinracing for some deep dish raceable and light wheels, like my Konig wideopens or the flatouts. They're cheap, but I hear they were sued by Ray's and Enkei and might not be available for much longer. Granted you have other purchase priorities right now, but if you sell the meshes on CR you might even come out on top.

I'd also suggest selling the FM intercooler and finding one without all the kinks, bends, and couplers in the piping. Either look at making a simpler design yourself, or look into buying their new one piece silicone hoses.

Good build so far though, you're basically copying my build, except with a 1.8. Should be good!
