added BOV to greddy kit, problem..
I finally put an intercooler and (cxracing) BOV on my miata w/ greddy kit. I ran the vacuum line to the intake manifold line (of the two on top right next to each other, the one closest to the front of the car) and I can't hear anything coming from the BOV, can only hear the wastegate noise (whoosh whoosh whoosh). Am I missing something?

Wait is that noise what is called compression surge? Is the line from the compressor to the waste gate run correctly or should it T to the intake also?
Or could it be my wastegate rod being adjusted too short (tight) causing it to make this noise?
Unless you messed with the wastegate rod, it should be pre-set and working fine, but I don't think it would be your wastegate, post a vid or something but I agree with sam, on the BOV being stuck or whatever, I Know when I had my greddy the woosh was the wastegate opening.
Okay so the whoosh is normal? The BOV is a greddy type s imitation from CX racing, the shit is loosened real far already...
The adjustable allen rod is sticking out like an inch
I know what you talking about I'm having the same problem mine isnt working at all the only noise i hear when I let off is turbo surge, I drove around the block with my bov disconnected and it sounded exactly the same. So I think I'm just gona buy a real bov not an imitation.I even took one of the springs out of it and it still wouldent do anything.
But did you have the same noise before you even installed a BOV? I have the noise before I installed the IC/BOV - just w/ the stock greddy kit... man I'm confused.
I dont know if i had it before I installed it bc I did it all at once, but I did drive around the block with the vacuum lines off and it still made the same noise as to when it is on. this Is what mine sounds like with the bov hooked up and when its not hooked up.
YouTube - SR20DET Compressor Surge |
haha dude I was about to post the same video! Thats what mine sounds like too.
If you're getting compressor surge, then your bypass valve is not installed or adjusted correctly.
the pic you posted is of your turbo and wastegate. we need a pic of your bov.
Thats what I thought too so I loosed the adjustment all the way and that didn't help so I took it apart and took one of the sprigs out of it and that didnt help either.
Don't have a pic right now but its the purple one from CXracing, the greddy type S replica, like I said above.
well mine didn't make that noise not even close! when did you get your kit, was it used? is your waste-gate even working? look take off your bov hook up the waste-gate alone and see if it makes the same noise. if so i have no idea my guess would be the waste-gate actuator is bad,*** I'm just guessing!**** seems logical to me :-)
I got the kit like a month or two ago. It was new. Without the BOV it does the same thing.
And it must be working because its keeping the car at around 5psi right?
BOVs are a finicky business, I've found. Mine would get stuck on the rubber O-ring, but now that I removed that O-ring, it doesn't get stuck and it doesn't leak (Don't know why the O-ring was there in the first place).

Get a real BOV... the china BOV are garbage.
Plenty of guys run the Chinese knockoff BOV's for thousands of miles with no problems... but the reliability/build quality is definitely not on par with name-brand production models. My bet is that the guts of yours are faulty or simply stuck. Without pics/video there is no help to be had, WE NEED A PICTURE OF HOW YOUR BOV IS SETUP/INSTALLED, AND THEN REMOVE IT, DISASSEMBLE IT, AND TAKE A PICTURE OF THE GUTS.

Does your BOV have 2 ports on it? if it does do you have on hooked up to a vacuum source, between the engine and throttle body, and the other some were between the turbo and the throttle body?

Ya Ive had 2 knock offs and they both work fine, both from CX racing. The only reason I got 2 is because I sold the first one with my old intercooler, It was the HKS style.
Are you driving it or just revving it? Boost won't build without load.. Check you boost gauge.
he said he drove it up the street.
Getting a greddy type RS today for 120 so I'll see for sure today.
Hmm, it was someone else that said they drove it up the street with the same issue. It was just a thought at any rate.. Good luck getting it back up. My Forge BOV is connected at the very first vacume line at the throttle Body with no problems..
All is well with the RS, and sounds great. If anyone wants a china BOV I'll be throwing it on the FS section for super cheap (+ shipping) - may work with lube.
My bov has two vacuum ports on it but it came with a T fitting to I have both of them hooked up to that, I'm getting my vacuum from the brake booster, same place I have my boost gauge hooked to.

Installing a Greddy Type S BOV in a DSM Eclipse/Talon/Laser shows how to hook up the type S. Make sure it's put on that way. The T fitting should be to tap off the manifold vac line.

My first BOV was the machined aluminum piston-style unit made by FM. It worked fine for a while, then started to get sluggish and siezed. I disassembled and cleaned it, re-lubed the piston, and put it back in. Again, fine for a while, then stopped working. Called FM, discussed the situation. They suggested that they are not typically failure-prone, but that they do require lubrication "about every other oil change." Heck, I was getting less than a thousand miles out of it. Disassembled again, cleaned everything with alcohol, used some fine sandpaper to polish the piston and bore, re-lubed, re-assembled, and the same thing. I trashed it and replaced it with a cheap Chinese-made "Type RS" BOV that I bought from an eBay vendor for <$50 shipped. I took it apart and removed the inner spring, installed it, and it's been working trouble-free for about 2 years with no adjustment and no maintenance. |

Top one will get a source from between the engine and the throttle body. The other can be left open or you can tap it into the charge piping if you wish. With both hooked up together.... they fight each other as one is a "push" and the other is a "pull" |
Thanks splitime that worked, well kinda I hear the bov go off now but its so quite. It sounds like I'm just blowing air out of my mouth when it goes off. I don't have compressor surge anymore though so that's good. I have it adjusted as loose as it will go and took one of the sprigs out.

Ha noooo its just quieter then I expected, I would like it to be just a hair louder nothing stupid loud. I'm just happy I don't have compressor surge any.
