Advice on DIY parts...

I'm an ex turbo DSM/4G63 (and supercharged Camaro, both ran 120+mph in the 1/4) looking to put some spare parts to use. Here's what I have:
Bone stock 1991 5spd 1.6L (runs like a top, good compression, solid overall)

14b turbo (solid) and T25 turbo (backup turbo, needs rebuild)
1st gen DSM BOV (uncrushed)
DSM side mount intercooler (x2 actually)
Adj Fuel Press Reg
Couplers, worm drive clamps, spare piping, vac line, etc...

Know I need: exhaust mani, MBC, downpipe/exhaust, injectors, tune, gaskets/fluids
May need: clutch, rear, ???

Goal, just looking to make the car more fun. 200whp would be nice but not a MUST. Have a little set aside to get this done but would like to deal with a few minor things first (finish tune up/service fluids, roll bar, sways, maybe even paint). Anyways, back on subject, I'd like a cast mani for longevity, HKS? BEGI? ??? Injector size (3XXcc)? Tuning software (leaning towards MSPNP)? Reliable PSI (10 is mild for the 14b but the 1.6L?)? Oh and nice to meet everyone... :)

Good luck finding a cast manifold for a DSM turbo.

Doesn't the greddy manifold use that flange? It is cast.

That would be easy to pick up. I think there is one on ebay that ends today?? or there are upgrades if you want new.

Double check me though!

Good luck! Welcome.

I've got a 14b on my 1.8. It's nice.

I see you're running a 16g.

I see many "T25" manifolds advertised. Not for 2G DSM T25's I take it? I searched a little for 14b and thought since I didn't see it, there was going to be a disconnect somewhere. I'll have to research on the manifold more. Thanks.

You're correct that the T25 manifolds advertised are for the more common Garrett flanges. Ebay has many crap-tastic tissue-walled stainless log manifolds for DSM turbos, but don't touch them if you want reliability.

Unless you are comfortable with a log manifold (which is what I run) or using an adapter plate, it might more economical to ditch the DSM turbo idea. Don't get me wrong, I love mine, and rebuild kits are cheap cheap cheap. Take a look at the ebay T3 flange cast log manifold. It's cheap, and some here have had surprising success. I hear you can find T3s cheap, too.

I'm ex-DSM as well as many others on the board.

The genius about the miata community is that it is very DIY much like the DSM community. It seems you have all the makings of a kit, however I would recommend considering using that 14b, or sourcing a SR20 t25 (standard garret flange and bigger compressor wheel then the girly DSM 25) or a t3 as mentioned above.

Your on the right path with parts, I would add:
  • 1.8 injectors (used parts forum)
  • possibly a fuel pump in the long run, the stocker seems to die out up top, especially if its old.
  • Clutch may or may not hold, but it is on borrowed time
  • Diff applies too - get a 1.8 open or torsen (or clutch RX-7)

Do some reading on the forums, LOTS of people run this standard setup your about to undertake. By the way, 80% of the people on this board shoot for 200, then swap parts and go bigger. I would suggest riding in a 200 rwhp miata, and possibly a 250 rwhp miata :) Might save you some money in the long run to go bigger now (aka megasquirt, 2560/2860, bigger injectors). I know personally I'm on my third turbo and third set of injectors ;)

Possible the best decision I made when turboing my car. Do it. :)

I've got a 14b on my 1.8 also and it's great. I made a simple log manifold out of parts I bought online. The flanges are easy and cheap to find, so you could start with some other manifold and just cut the flange off and weld on the proper flange.

Thanks for all of the great replies. I've been lurking on the board for a while and appreciate what the forum has to offer (search is my FRIEND). I'll be sure to post up things as they progress and I'm sure I've got A LOT to learn about this little project. But I really appreciate it, DIY is half the fun I think. You get to be creative and YOUR hands and mind (and a little wallet) went into building it.
