So I’m in the process of prepping my car (1992 1.6) for a FM turbo kit, currently have a Torsen swap and going to purchase FM’s “happy meal” this weekend. My next part of the puzzle is Megasquirt and a wideband, this is where I need opinions.

I saw the AEM Failsafe gauge and Innovate’s dual gauge and thought the clean single gauge look would be better than running dual gauges on the a-pillar. My only concern is that they have issues (better to full *** one thing than half *** two things). Anyone have experience with these?

Go to Meet and Greet and introduce yourself. Take the opportunity give a feel of what you have and what you what to do to and with it. Post some pictures. Give a feel for your proposed budget. Are you a retired engineer, or a 20 YO college student?

If you use an MS3 and a AEM O2 sensor and controller (CAN feed, no offsets), you do not need a boost gauge or an AFR gauge. MS with TS will display both for tuning and the MS can be set with failsafes to prevent catastrophic failures related to either more quickly than you can respond by watching the gauges, even if you are watching them at the time the bad condition occurs.

Actually, even the famous Innovate LC-2 with offsets can be used. The offset can be determined with their software and a connection to the controller without a gauge. The offset values have been published in this forum, and I think they would be universal for NA and NB.

If I were starting from scratch, I would use the AEM and CAN input with an MS3.

This is what I did and I love it. I don't have anything other than stock gauges visible. You need an AEM wideband with CAN output. I use this one.

 

I was thinking: But it looks like AEM gives no discount for leaving off the gauge.

 

I run an innovate LC-2 controller wideband straight to my megasquirt. I then have the perfect tuning universal CAN gauge running from my megasquirt to an eyeball vent and that tells me every bit of information I would want to know.

I only plug that product because I own one and it was what made me make the switch to run a megasquirt. The guy owner is very responsive if you have any questions and I have been very happy with mine. I have no skin in the game with that gauge other than I am happy I own mine.

 

I've been eyeing these gauges for awhile.. So there's clearly some great options above, but let's pretend he doesn't have a MS3. Has anyone used these guages to know how the boost control function works? I know that DIYPNP and MSPNP come with the ability to use EBC but from what I've read here... it doesn't seem like it works all that well in CL mode. Maybe for those of us around here who run budget MS ECU's these might not be a bad idea. The failsafe could control boost, have it's own safety mechanism, and MS could also have a secondary control over any overboost situation? I'm spitballing a little bit.

Edit. I’m actually thinking about this gauge below by innovate (SCG-1). The failsafe doesn’t control boost.
