Air filter mounting location. Your opinion please
I had to clock the turbo again because it was not allowing the hood to close.
https://www.miataturbo.net/picture.p...pictureid=1054 Here are two options for air filter location. Obviously I have to cut the pipe and attach it, so use your imagination. On orients the filter at a 45 degree angle and the other at a 90 that places it at the front of the motor. I third option is to try and get one of those very thin mushroom style filters, but it seems like it would be really close to the exhaust manifold. At least with the first two its a little farther from the turbo and manifold heat. https://www.miataturbo.net/picture.p...pictureid=1053 https://www.miataturbo.net/picture.p...pictureid=1052 |
dude my filter is way bigger than yours i just hamered on the inside alil and then trimmed the hood to make it all fit. Your damn turbo outlet pipes are in the way move them and you will be able to swing that filter easily.

Save the weight of the pipe and bolt it right to the turbo? That's what I did since I didn't want to bother with cold air boxes, extra pipes and clamps, etc. I think the ease of it is well worth whatever power I'm loosing from heat. It's much better than directly behind the radiator like it used to be anyways.

Clock the turbo down.

^^^ You are correct, I could have oriented it that way. I changed my mind at the last minute because I wanted easy access to the AC compressor without removing a bunch of stuff. In hind sit this was probably stupid. I mean, how often does a person need to get to the ac compressor. Unfortunately now, i'm not sure If I have the piping to put it in that orientation. I'll pick one of the two above filter locations. If I decide I hate it I will have to clock turbo again and make some changes.
Thanks for the picture. I had actually forgotten about that orientation. I was lacking a 2" silicone 90 at the time. |
Behind the headlight, it looks like you still have enough room in there

Cut a hole in the hood and stick it out!! Sorry man had to add!! No but they're right, behind the headlight or circle back and behind the strut tower beside the brake master like CXRacing does in their kits.
|
Stick it on your turbo. Buying a new filter and making insane piping to go all over your engine bay is a waste of time/money.
|
If you do end up putting the filter directly onto the turbo, bend up a heat shield. Maybe even channel some cool air to it if you feel it necessary.
|
I first had mine just straight on the turbo, no problems at all worked fine. I wanted to clean up the engine bay, so i moved it up behind the headlight and made a heat shield, temp dropped about 8-10 degrees in the full range of speed according to megasquirt
|
I'll try behind the headlight again. I don't think I tried after clocking the turbo again. I should really just clock it again like Brain has it. It's just more work, and another $16 silicone adapter. However, I would be able to use my heat shield since it would put the filter back in the original FM location.
|
it was REALLY tight. I had to replace the lower rad hose with a universal-flex.
|
If you clock it you will have less bends as well
|
back by the brake booster
Begi sells wide flat filters that are perfect for behind the headlight on my nb. I dont see a problem why u cant fit one on an NA. http://www.bellengineering.net/produ...roducts_id=253 |
I know this is an old thread but this is whaere I am at now.
My filter is mounted ona short piece of 45 degree aluminum pipe with a silicone coupler to the turbo. It is a ricer style filter with a plastic shroud that opens right near the driver's side headlight motor near the drivers headlight. I like the fact that the shroud tries to make the air come in from the front away from the turbo. Note that I also have a TSI on that side. BUT the actual filter itself under that shroud is little more than the size of a cofee filter. It go dirty in a hurry and I doubt that it is really filtering much. It looks like the one here http://www.siliconeintakes.com/produ...4659d74ba9347c So what are the options ? A 180 turn towards the firewall ? Anybody use OEM style cone paper filter ? Anybody go past the side of the radiator to go get some cool air ? |

K&N flows ~25% more air than a common paper filter, while the UNI only flows ~21% more air than a common paper filter. It doesn't flow as well as K&N...HOWEVER it provides MUCH better filtration. Dust retention on K&N is 45 microns (0.00177"), while UNI is 4microns (0.00015"). With it filtering qualities that much better than the K&N you can keep your ~4% more airflow. But not that you would care, I've seen your build...do you even run a filter? |

No. Its not fail. And it doesn't flow as well as K&N...BUT it provides MUCH better filtration. Dust retention on K&N is 45 microns (0.00177"), while UNI is 4microns (0.00015"). But that you would care, I've seen your build...do you even run a filter? And yes it is fail. It puts a huge ass cover onto a cone filter, rendering the whole filter about as useful as the opening in front of it. Meaning he could just as well run an inline filter the size of his inlet tube and have the same flow. You want the best filtration you run a stock fucking airbox. You want more flow you run a cone. Which is what most here do. Running the ricer ass cone cover is like running a 3" exhaust with a 1.5" outlet. And that is FAIL. Much like your logic. And yes I have a filter. Post pics of your ghetto ass home brew shit and we'll see how much room you have to talk. |

Right now I'm running a beer can with holes and a dirty sock inside, Sometimes I use an empty can of Red Bull with paper towels stuffed in it :bowrofl: but I have my eye on one that BEGI and Flying Miata. It is shaped like an oval ;) |
18psi, don't you live with your parents?
