Default Another boost controller thread

Ok, I sold my Hallman es mbc to a friend a few weeks ago. He desperately needed one and I've seen many on here use the cheap ebay ones with good success.

I've been plugging variations of "mbc, opinions on mbc, which mbc, etc" into the search function only to get a shitload of completely useless threads.

I know we've had a "opinions on ebay mbc" thread like 5-6 months ago in which links to ebay 20 dollar mbc's were posted and many claimed to be using them with good feedback.

So, can anyone either find the thread for me or let me know which ones everyone got? I'm sick of 8psi and want to turn it up, and just don't see myself wasting 60 on another hallman if the knockoffs work just as good.

I WANT A GOOD BALL+SPRING MBC

From ebay I get 10000000000000+ hits for mbc, and I THINK this is the one that was discussed before:
THE ORIGINAL NXS MOTORSPORTS MANUAL BOOST CONTROLLER : eBay Motors (item 260300497380 end time Feb-06-10 10:38:36 PST)

Can anyone confirm or post a link to the correct one?

The one you linked is probably the best ebay mbc. However, I've had 2 and they both ended up coming apart from vibration causing me to overboost. Yes I tighten the backing nut every time, the mbc just had to be so loose(unthreaded) to provide the low boost level i was looking for (10-12psi).

Ive also had one of the really cheap anodized looking ones, and it did not work at all. At all, lol.

Finally I just ended up dropping coin on a turboxs unit. Which works flawlessly btw. Although it is NOT a ball and spring mbc. I'm pretty sure its a valve type mbc.

To summarize: IMO get a real mbc and be done with it.

I forgot the difference in operation between ball+spring and bleed type. I was told a long time ago that ball+sping=best. If this is incorrect and I can get away with using a bleed type I'll go that route. I think I can pick up a turboXS one for about 30 bux or so.

I only need 10-12 psi for now. Maximum I think I'll EVER need will be 14. My wga spring is at 8 now. So I'll only need 2-6 more psi and the better response that comes from an mbc vs just the spring.

One thing I didn't like about my hallman, even though it worked flawlessly, is that it was fairly bulky compared to others, as well as the overall shape of it made it kinda hard to mount it somewhere so it wouldn't bounce around.

18psi, I got that same one and works very well. Mine never gets loose, I do not know I may be lucky or whatever.

It is true that on innitial full boost it may go a little over than the settings, like mine is set to 10 and when down shifting and pedal to the metal will read 12 psi. I kind of like it like that as it will go to 2 to 3 psi more from 3500 to almost 5000 and then stay level at 10 psi all the way to redline.

Its a very practical MBC, I do recommend it.

Note: I did try it to 15 psi and worked very well. I need a BEGI to resolve the too rich idle issue so for now it stays at 10 psi. The spring in the external EBAY wastegate is for 8 psi.

I bought one on ebay 2 years ago that was a hybrid design. Ball and spring plus an adjustable bleed. It lets me completely tune out overboost. I love it, and it has little hex screws that allow you to adjust the tension on the adjustment screws. It was an extra 5 dollars for a ceramic ball bearing. I'm looking for it on ebay. I think it might be worth discussing the hybrid design. Again, I'm still looking for it, not sure if they sell it anymore.

Thanx guys, I think I'll end up getting the one I posted in #1. Unless someone convinces me of a better alternative for not much more money.

Was considering going EBC but have NEVER had any problems with mbc's on any of my cars, plus they're so easy to set up and work with that I'll just stick with what works.

I've got the one in the first post. Works OK. My last boost controller was a Greddy Profec B and I really miss it, but for the money this one can't be beat. I don't even need an allen wrench. I just loosen the 14mm nut and turn the allen bolt by hand and retighten the nut. I don't have any problems with it vibrating loose, but mine is just suspended in free air by the two vauum lines, it's not bolted to anything so vibration would pretty impossible. Also, just FYI to anyone else looking for one, several of us have found if you submit a best offer of $15, he'll take it.

scott, you should just order parts for 10 and build and sell them for a tiny profit. they'd be the cheapest thing out there.

I will be building the above linked boost controller.
I have enough for about 5 of them so depending on my success I may have a few extras after this weekend.
