any of you 1.6 owners running a t3/t04e?

im wondering as i am thinking about tackling the monster of a turbo, at least in the miata world. hehe. i've always been attracted to that big bang at ~4k rpm type setups, i guess if you'd like to put it this way...i like highway built cars. i really dont do much playing in launches and corners so low-end power isnt too important to me, i just like the hard top-end pulls...that instantly hammered down horsepower effect. i was going to go with the greddy kit, it was only appealing to me cause everything is in one box, i could just build on that kit instead of spending a little more time piecing together my own, and it is at a set price, a fairly reasonable price at that. but i knew the turbo was too small for my taste, and since i have the knowledge i figured why not tackle my own bigger turbo setup you know? i would just like to see if any other people are using the t3/t04e on a non-built 1.6.
oh and if it helps any, i'd be shooting for the 250-275 hp range if thats possible on the stock bottom end. how much can the stock bottom take? i really dont plan on going over 300 (and i know that might be considered somewhat big hp to us miata guys)

just wondering if someone can point me in the right direction. If only i were in San Antonio i'd swing by Ric's shop. maybe i should give him a call or shoot him a email.

thanks

Rich

oh and also....if there are any other turbos recommended....please let me know.

The T3/T4 is too big....you probably won't reach full spool until 4500rpm with a good exhaust. You might wanna check out a T3 super 60 for better results. Stock bottom end should be good to 230-250rwhp on the 1.6.

TheBandit 08-20-2006 08:08 PM

I am using a T3/T04E 50 trim with a .48 exhaust. I do have a 1.8L which probably helps a bit, but I really like it. I also wanted more of a big bang. If you want it, just do it. Most of the people here don't want the lag and such.. so they are going to tell you something smaller. The bottom end will only be good for around 250. Beyond that things start going south. Let me know if your interested in a manifold.

thanks for the replies. Yeah i was eyeing the t3 super 60 cause i friend of mine has one laying in his garage down the street. but where do people normally see full boost at with the S60?

i really dont care about spool below 3k rpm...i just want it to hit full boost at around 4k (seeing as when im putting it through its paces, rpm never drops below 4k anyway.)

The Bandit: when do you start to notice spool, and when do you get full boost?

correct me if im wrong but the t3/t40e comes normally in .48 and .57 a/r right?
what is the a/r of the t3 super 60?

hehe, maybe i should search a little......but hey why not make use of the thread for others that might be wondering :bigtu:

oh and what are you using for engine management Bandit?

ColoradoSpringsMiata 08-21-2006 04:17 PM

bump* :)

Braineack 08-21-2006 04:53 PM

I could hit 9psi by 3.5k; spools at 2.5k. Not sure what this new setup will react like.

ColoradoSpringsMiata 08-21-2006 09:39 PM

hmm.... sounds decent braineack....for some reason though i keep thinking you have the tdo4h. hehe

but i think im going to give Ric of racingmazda a call here sometime, cause i was reading about this one guy that used the t3/t40e (and other goods in the Xkit) with the TECIII on a stock 1.6 and put down 312hp after tune and all that jazz before the guy upgraded to a 1.8L. of course i know other things came into play like injectors and fuel pump and such. plus i wouldn't be aiming for that much, but more around 250-ish hp, at least til i see how everything comes together...then maybe ill tinker on the line of blowing the motor...hehe...
im not plannin on buying the Xkit, but would like to build my own setup somewhat like that. so yeah, still leaning more towards the t3/t40e...curiosity owns me and i've got money to experiment. so just give me a few months :gay:

thanks for the help guys. and post up if you still have thoughts and comments.

If you're aiming for ~250rwhp, then there's really no reason on Earth to go with a turbo larger than a GT2560/T28/T3 S60...unless you enjoy turbo lag

TheBandit 08-21-2006 10:07 PM

I get fullboost around 4000-4200 (10psi). I am using the Link ECU.

Nice, if only i had a 1.8 :( bleh...i will eventually

F20turbo 08-22-2006 12:35 AM

I used a T3/t04E 40 trim w/.48 turbine on my 1.6L and I would see 15psi @ 4500-4600 and 10psi @ 4200. A 50 trim would add about 200 rpm to those lag numbers. It will easily make 300whp at around 18psi or so.

The T3 S60 was better I think. It spooled a lot earlier ( before 4k ) and held 18psi all the eay to redline time after time.

ColoradoSpringsMiata 08-22-2006 07:07 AM

thanks andy thats some good info. what kind of power were you seeing at 15 psi?

It was around 250-270whp. I didnt dyno that setup, but it was somewhere around there.

ColoradoSpringsMiata 08-22-2006 04:46 PM

Sounds good!

but where'd you find a to4e in 40 trim? i seem to only find them in 50 trim.

I hated the 40 trim, dont ever use that piece of shit compressor wheel. The 50 trim will work just fine, and is a LOT better. Youll see boost about 200rpm later than a 40 trim ( you would never notice the difference ) and you will make really nice power with a 50 trim T04E.

ColoradoSpringsMiata 08-23-2006 05:04 PM

hehe, did you have an incident with the 40 trim wheel?

thanks for the info andy, you've been most helpful. pretty stuck on the t04e as my choice, since i'd be using the same turbo whenever i get the 1.8 built. should still be able to hand a couple people their ass's with it on the 1.6. :bigtu: t04e 50 trim it is :) now time to figure out my options on a mani, downpipe, sizing the intercooler, and fuel/timing. ugh.....

and ANDY, how were you controlling fuel/time/knock when you had that setup on the 1.6?
