ArtieParty's Turbo Build

Well I guess I should finally start my turbo build thread here. As some of you may know, I am having TurboTim / Shore Motorsports build me the components for my turbo kit. Tim is making me the manifold, downpipe, and full 3" exhaust including metalcore cat and muffler. Tim also ordered the turbo and all the lines I need for it. The turbo is a GT2560. Here's a list of the other things that I sourced already and are waiting to go on:

* Ebay 18x12x3 (core) intercooler
* 2.5" stainless intercooler piping
* FM Blow-off valve (thanks Yoram!)
* RX-7 460cc injectors recently cleaned by Injector Rehab
* Vishnu dual feed fuel rail
* Toyota Coil-on-plugs (COPs)
* Prosport green/white boost/vacuum gauge
* Protege valve cover
* ACT HD clutch

I guess I should mention that my car is a 95 (R package for those of you who care). We recently swapped in a 99 head and deleted the a/c system. I am running a 94/95 Megasquirt (MAF deleted) and have a AEM UEGO wideband O2 sensor.

Here's the pic's I just got from the shop:

Won't be shiny for long.

Braineack 08-18-2008 09:30 AM

he takes the turbo off the rack and puts it in his car.

ArtieParty 09-09-2008 09:46 AM

Update-

Installed the 460s, the Vishnu rail, and the COPS before I gave it to Tim. Tim had the car for a couple days and finished up everything he was doing for me. I had the car towed to a friends house and am ordering the couple extra parts I need now that the turbo itself is in. Tim and the shop say its his best exhaust to date. ( and I agree). Ill try to get pics of the final product soon. All I have are pics of the manifold and turbo in the car. And the turbo is actually clocked a different way then in the pics. its pointing more towards the fender now and a little up.

Wouldnt it have been simpler to just make Paul an offer he cant refuse and buy "The Machine"?

btw. im still waiting for your answer Artie.

ArtieParty 09-09-2008 09:53 AM

1. I dont think Paul would sell the machine. Besides, it doesnt have heat.

2. Yes, I'll take it. Lemme know where to paypal you the money. Tonight we're going to V17 for some Go-Karting. How far is that from you?

paul 09-09-2008 10:16 AM

Paul wouldn't refuse $7500

ArtieParty 09-09-2008 10:24 AM

Doh!

1. Everyone has their price.
2. 31.7 miles, about an hour. I cant go tonight anyway.

Cheap.

patsmx5 09-09-2008 11:02 AM

Everything's for sale. For the right price. Few exceptions.

TurboTim 09-09-2008 09:15 PM

I hope you like it and everything went ok at the store. Remember to tighten all the nuts and bolts on the turbo (inlet and downpipe) after you have a few heat cycles in there. They will be loose. Just make them "tight" using a regular wrench and one hand, do not go apeshit on them with a long wrench/ratchet or bounching your weight onto the wrench.

Let me know if you have any questions or need any help with the intercooler plumbing.

What happened to your stock exhaust? Do I need to drop that off at your house?

Yes, EVERYTHING is for sale for the right price!!

ArtieParty 09-09-2008 09:18 PM

Everything went smooth at the store. I picked up the exhaust and took it home in the 96. AAA came in about 10 min after i called them to pick up the car.

If he put all his weight into something on the car, I would be more worried about him blowing the tires and bending the wheels.

When they were in the box they were stain-less. I didn't spill anything on them. :fawk:

ArtieParty 09-11-2008 10:26 AM

Picture update. Started the intercooler piping last night, along with taking out the AC condensor that we left in before.

Cut your hoses and straighten out that clamp. If those 2 pipes are touching, I could weld them together if you mark them with a sharpie, if you want. But you probably don't seeing how you didn't want me to do it entirely, duh. haha.

Where is the air filter going? Looking good so far.

Buy one. $550. No A/C or P/S though.

That's not with ceramic coating right?

Yea, everything's not final yet so those clamps will be realigned beforehand. And I'm still not sure where I'm putting the air filter. But I do know that the BEGi cold air box won't work now.

Hell no. That's mild steel schedule 40 or stainless steel schedule 10 with mild steel head flange. Add $80 for a stainless steel head flange.

Said that to Artie yesterday but don't think you want to be bothered welding this ebay aluminum pipe. And yes, they are close enough to touch. Cut a u-bend in half to clock it a few degrees down.

ArtieParty 09-14-2008 03:40 AM

Hot side of the intercooler is done.

Coolant lines and bypass done. Custom t-splice in lower radiator hose done, 5/16 fitting tapped into water inlet for turbo cooling.

Absurdflow and 460s... are you doing a low boost car?

ArtieParty 09-14-2008 10:48 AM

No. I just haven't found any 550s yet. Well, I haven't found any 550s under $300. So for right now I guess I wont be able to turn up the boost just yet. :sad2:

y8s 09-14-2008 11:31 AM

i spoze you can raise the fuel pressure

paul 09-14-2008 01:24 PM

Oh yeah, keep meaning to tell you Artie. OG might have a spare vortec sitting around you can use to raise your fuel pressure.

I was at 83% max DC on my 460s when I made 270rwhp.

What boost pressure??

paul 09-14-2008 02:53 PM

14psi. Artie has the exact same setup.

TurboTim 09-14-2008 09:30 PM

I run 6 year old RC440's and high boost. Hopefully high hp too...;) Somewhere around 45psi static fuel pressure. I think I kiss low 80's at 14psi and 7200rpm. I think. Whatever.

When I made 270rwhp I was in the 70's injector duty cycle.

TurboTim 09-14-2008 09:34 PM

Nice pictures Artie. I hope that lower longass bracket isn't the only thing holding hte intercooler in. I'm sure you guys did brackets to the top intercooler bosses too.

You aren't driving the car until you have the entire intercooler plumbing, right?!

How's the volume? Paul sent me a video of the car running but cell phone quality sucks.

Keep an eye on the oil drain fitting in the oil pan for oil leaks. I suggested JB weld but my dad wasn't going to clean off the sludge on your oil pan and risk it leaking anyways. hehe I agree. There was enough thread depth to use teflon tape so you should be ok.

EDIT: Again, remember to retighten the bolts and nuts on the turbo after a few heat cycles.

paul 09-14-2008 09:39 PM

It's much quieter than the Machine, not as quiet as the Daily.

His car is sitting in my driveway still. (6 fucking Miatas outside when no friends are over. It's ridiculous.) It will not be driven till the cold side piping and filter are done.

ArtieParty 09-17-2008 03:49 PM

Just ordered the 550s and had them sent to Injector Rehab. They said they still give the mt.net discount even though they're not a supporting vendor anymore. Intercooler couplers should be in on friday.

mikef85 09-17-2008 04:31 PM

Any reason you decided to put the T in the lower radiator hose instead of the upper radiator hose?

ArtieParty 09-17-2008 05:14 PM

Its not a coolant reroute at this point. That just moves the coolant lines out of the way for the turbo.

paul 09-17-2008 05:44 PM

Yes actually. To prevent the motor from running too cool and staying forever in warm up enrichment mode. With the cooler temps we have seen already(60s) my car with the t-splice in the upper hose had trouble maintaining high enough operating temps. I have since moved it to the lower and copied what I did for Artie.

Ha, That is something I wouldn't even think of since I am so used to my Texas climate. Makes sense.

TurboTim 09-18-2008 09:00 AM

I use the heater core line to feed my turbos. Keeps you from having to tap that water neck on the water pump. Instead of JBwelding the large 5/8 barb on the T fitting, just use the smaller 3/8. Unless you also need a port for the return line from the throttle body, in which case I'll shut up now.

paul 09-18-2008 09:10 AM

need to get the water out of the heater core back into the front of the engine. the factory mixing manifold doesn't fit with that turbo setup so that's how we roll.

ArtieParty 09-19-2008 09:06 AM

Update- should be getting the couplers in today and have it out on the street later on. But in the meantime, here's some pics that Tim took of the downpipe/exhaust he made and some comparison pics to what paul has.

All done with a few exceptions:

Artie couldn't find a K&N at the local auto parts stores that fit so we temporarily installed the way-too-small filter that came with my BEGi S kit.

Getting a lil turbo flutter with the non-adjustable FM BOV. Guess he has to look into a lighter spring.

Stock clutch starts slipping as soon as you get into boost down around 2600rpm. Thing was making 4psi at 2200. Artie has an ACT XT clutch waiting to go in. He's just a lazy bastard.

Very nice setup so far man
