Assess my compressor wheel
I stumbled across this when I pulled off my intake and filter. It’s hard to tell but lookes like a crack starting to form. It’s a used GT2560r that I put on last year. It does have some in and out and side to side play but the wheel doesn’t hit. Anyway should I be concerned of this thing breaking off? And am I SOL if I have to buy a new turbo or can I source a new CHRA?

I don't really see any cracks? Are you talking about the 2 marks under the compressor nut at around 9 O'clock?
Those look more like indentations than cracks to me, but not certain from the pictures. |
I’m talking about the yellow on the blade, that isn’t a marking is it?
|
Looks like paint for balancing to me. Can you feel a crack with your fingernail? Perhaps it just doesn't show in the pics :dunno:
|
Yeah maybe it’s just from balancing but it’s weird I never noticed it before. I ran a small scribe across the blade surface and couldn’t really feel any cracks. Do you know roughly how much in and out play is normal?
|
IIRC, in a ball bearing turbo a little bit of axial play (in and out) is normal. Radial play is bad.

That Mark is from balancing. My turbo looks exactly like that. Slight amount of in and out and side to side is perfectly normal. You're fine.

Thanks guys. I pulled off the intake and saw some oil then the blade and kinda freaked. So I might setup a catch can or vta.

As a heads up, if it's a genuine Garrett turbo w/ all Garrett wheels, you can contact ATP Turbo and reference the "Ball bearing CHRA Exchange program" and for your old CHRA and $475 + shipping they'll send you a brand new CHRA. Garrett's website had lots of good information before they redid it, but it's useless and difficult to find now.
