AVO Manifold Cracked?
Hi,
I have just bought an AVO manifold which I knew was damaged and repaired but it appears worse than expected. It has a crack which runs from the turbo flnage to the head side of the manifold all the way through on the top and the underside. It virtually looks like it has been split in half and welded up. The guy I bought it off saif it had been welded by a friend who wasnt an expert but did a good job. He heated it up then welded it. From the pictures it looks ok with a bit of an ugly scare mark all the ay through it. But on inspection the weld looks like it has cracked as well and it hasnt been done inside so you can see the full crack inside. Firstly can cast metal be professionally welded/can it be salvaged? Any suggestions? Thanks Andy |
Buy a new manifold made with sch-40 pipe from ARTech.

Im almost certain it will but I still have that element of doubt as I have never had cast repaired before. But as my friend rightly said. When you buy turbo flanges you can weld them to the standard cast manifold with no problem. Hopefully thats right, just looking for some comformation. |
welding cast is pretty tough compared to just normal steel. can you post up a picture so we can see the problem?

Pics of said crack?

The manifold looks better than it is!!
You can see the crack through the weld on the side with the longest weld mark. It looks like the whole manifold has split in half but it never. Its not far off though! I have been speaking with someone today and they said you cna get it cast welded. They said you use cast welding rods and need to heat the metal to a precise temperature. Im going to try and take it to a garage on Tuesday who are supposed to do these repairs and see what happens. |
trash it it will just keep cracking.

Relief cuts on the flange are a good idea.

Can it be salvaged?
|
no!
upgrade time....im pretty sure you can sent that manifold to ARTech and he can make you a replacement SS mani... |
Yes, call Abe because that manifold is done.

I will give him a call tomorrow and see what he is like for price. But as I just paid £95 for this manifold im alittle bit miffed!! that it wont repair. I will still take it to the garage that I know does the welding to see if I can salvage it. If I can and it last me 1000 miles then goes so be it and I will get a new one. But I would like to be able to have a go with it.

all im gonna say is do it right the first time.......
