Ball bearing turbo rebuild

My T25 has some play in the shaft and I can only assume that it will get worse. So who do you recommend to rebuild or where can I get a rebuild kit?

I checked gpopshop.com but it says rebuild kits for ball bearing turbos are not being manufactured. Does this mean they arent making them or they dont exist?

Thanks,
Phil

Rebuild = replacement chra from what I've found. ~450 and you send yours.. they send a brand new complete chra. (chra including wheel assemblies)

It's on my list of things to replace on my car.

^ thats about as the dumb as the tool that tatood the VW logo on his neck.

Braineack 07-14-2008 11:47 PM

that's a journal bearing diagram....have to replace the entire chra with turbine attached.

levnubhin 07-15-2008 09:01 AM

Well thats just fantastic.

Splitime who are you sending yours to?

Are there any other options? I know I could search for another turbo but then I run the risk of the same problem. If I repleced the chra on mine what king of life expectancy should I expect?

BTW, what the heck does CHRA stand for.

I just bugged Steph for this info the other day... and can't find where I put it. Bah, I suck. Ask BEGI though, they have a shop they use and they quoted me 450. Basically I send them mine, and they send me a fresh chra from garrett.

WOW, that's out the ass man. (not the $450, the $765)

So wait, you have some minor shaft play, and are worried it will get worse, why not just start saving now and keep what you have until it does go out. BB turbos last quiet some time, they don't generally get rebuilt that often cause they don't go out like the JB ones. You do know that some shaft play is actually normal in a BB turbo, right.
If it doesn't move in and out, only side to side, then you are fine.

How about this... the turbine wheel pictured... is on my car. I've done a track day, 2 autox's and some drag pulls on it.

I have a 2day event this weekend... i've lost spool... but meh.

Shaftplay isn't a giant concern on a BB unless its HUGE and touching housings etc. Mine has some play, but spins freely. Shut off the car and it just keeps spinning as I head into the house.

It does move in/out very slightly. My biggest worry is if this thing could actually fail and then send parts flyin thru my motor. Is that not possible then I would be less worried.

Its not a matter of saving up. Im just hoping theres better options. My friend bought a very slightly used 2560 for $600. Knowing that makes it really hard for me to spend $765 on my 2554.

You do have an Intercooler, right?
The wheel typically does not explode and the bearings dont fail dramatically, more like gradually. First sign of failure is major in-out movement of the shaft (shut up) and once it moves bad enough it starts touching the housing, when this happens, you will know it. Do not run the turbo past that or then you will be fishing shit out of your oil pan.

Yes I do have an intercooler.

Im gonna make sure it dosent touch the housing at all. If it dosent I'll just keep a very close eye on it.

In the mean time. Anyone have any leads on turbos? What else out there will bolt up to my Begi mani and dp.

if you cant push hard on it and make it contact the housing in any direction, you have nothing to worry about.
