basic turbo setup
i have a 96' that i wanna run at roughly 8psi and nothing more. it sill needs to pass the obd2 emissions test. i have an 02 clamp from flying miata, bipes acu, turbo manifold for a t25 turbo, intercooler, bov, and an aem wide band. Now my main concern is making sure i have enough fuel. What type of fuel management should i purchase?
|
Megasquirt. You're also going to need injectors.
|
i wanna use my factory ecu and i was looking at 300cc+injectors possibly.
|
Run plug-and-play standalone and swap ECU for emissions?
|
You'll at the minimum need some sort of piggyback ECu then. You have to have something to tune it with...

so your saying i can run a megasquirt and still pass my obd2 test?
|
You can use use an AFPR to control fuel along with the 320cc injectors and o2 clamp. That along with bipes should let you run close to 8psi and still be obd2 complaint.
|
now there are different ratio ones like the disc type that are 8:1,10:1,12:1 or the begi one.
which one would be the correct type? |
As much as I hate to say it, a power card or voodoo box will pass emissions and be easy to install and supply fuel for around 7-8psi depending. Now you'll eventually want more boost and realize the power card/voodoo box sucks and end up with a stand alone and finding someone who's "really good" at emissions testing, like I have. Or maybe you won't and it will suffice. Either way its not a terrible way to get a basic system running.

AEM F/iC. Boomslang makes a plug and play harness.
|
So does any body run a fmu anymore? Im trying to stay away from running a different or piggyback ecu to get enough fuel.

I would like to use a fmu if somebody could tell me what ratio to use. If that does not work then ill get some sort of ecu.
|
Honestly I would give Begi a call and talk to them about it and then order theirs. It is probably one of the best on the market and will be worth the change. They will also probably be able to help you set it up to.
Here is a link to more info on them. |
Run the one that will give you 14.7 AFR at full boost.
But seriously, I like how you're trying to be spoon fed without coming off like a lazy noob. Throw it on there, plug in a wideband, and start adjusting. |
Im running a 90 miata with a msd boost box, t25, cartech fmu, 305cc injectors, 190hp fuel pump and rx7 afm. I have it set for 10 psi with no issues other than running overly rich under boost but I just havent had any spare time to tweak the fmu and afm to get a smoother afr. Most guys on here feel its better to go ahead and spend the extra cash for a MS than use fmus and such.
As for your questions I would agree with going with the BEGI fmu for the easier adjustability. |

new? fair market value used? How much does an ms1 and rx7 injectors cost: new? fair market value used? What is the limitation on the former vs the latter? If you answer these questions honestly and correctly, you'll kick yourself in the foot for thinking its "more expensive". I can kinda sorta understand the whole "obd2 compliance" thing, and even then I'd much rather just swap to stock ecu/injectors for the annual or bi-annual test. Takes about an hour working slowly. |
When I see a thread about anything OBDII, I close that tab and move on.
|
Stock injectors/(stock fuel pressure) run out of fuel at 6psi.
|
I'm with 18psi on this. It would take about an hour to swap injectors, unplug one ECU and plug in the other, and put your factory MAF and snorkel back on. Seriously, an hour. And you would need to swap back to stock injectors for your smog test anyway if you were using an FMU. So 30 minutes.
Are you afraid of ECUs? I was. But not now. If I had known it was this easy I would have done it a bit sooner. |
I just did this few months back. I'm running an NB so i have to open up the intake manifold to pull the injectors... injectors took me about an hr (1st time i've done them my self), maf took me about 5 mins and the ecu another 10 mins to swap.
|
Yeah I am obviously a noob on here. Maybe ill just call begi and see what they can tell me. Thanks yinz for the good information!

Giving BEGI a call will probably be very helpful. I'm personally planning/trying to keep my OBD2 compliance with a MS1 running in parallel to the stock computer. I *think* I can make it work if I get a reasonable tune, but I've been too busy to really work on the car lately and get a few necessary things done on it. |
hopefully this car will be all sorted out and tuned for this summer.
