watch flyin miata's deal of the day. on rare occasion they'll have overbore pistons, but i can't remember any specifics.

Hmm I paid 1k for pauters + wisecos together due to a sale. This is typically the best time of year to buy engine parts. Try raceeng.com? I bought from them like 2 years ago after my crankwalk adventure.

Oh wait dude youre trying to build up a 1.6, thats why it is so pricey.

I assume so, since plenty of people run stock pistons with aftermarket rods.

last set i saw was the 94+ 9.0:1 stockers... 150 bucks or something. no doubt they'd give you a similar deal with a phone call.

Magna, why would you run stock rod's if you're gonna get better pistons. I know the rods are good to pretty high HP but if you're gonna get in there why not do them both. Any reason other than money?

nope just money and i doubt i'll max the rods. They should be good for 300+whp right

Most people seem to stick with stock pistons and upgrade the rods. The pistons are slightly more resistant to detonation and they crack instead of shattering if they fail. Otherwise not much to recommend them.

That's what I was thinking too.

FWIW: Someone recently pointed out that I should at least upgrade the rods on my P5 as they are the very weak and not even low boost friendly, I haven't found any forged rods that will work with the stock pistons though? So I may have to buy both, which seems like over kill on a 8psi set up...

naw dude, rods first then pistons. I went with GTX rods ( only revving to 7200 ) and wiseco pistons.

on the civic i bought some forged pistons 9.0:1 and stock rods because my tuner messed up the timing map pretty bad so now i have a stock civic with lower compression forged pistons with stock rods. i like it cause i can tune alot of the fuel out and give it some advance and get away with some 89 oct. right now i am getting about 42 mpg, hybrid that honda.

so i guess i am just saying i like the stock rods and forged pistons as having some good pistons will allow more tuning adjustability and leanyency. just dont go turning up the boost

Not quite... forged pistons are stronger, but also more brittle. They are less likely to survive knock than the stock hypereutectic pistons. Now, if hondas come with crappy stock pistons I can see your arguement. But in a miata, the stock pistons will be more forgiving (under a certain power level obviously).

I'm using cheap hypereutectic pistons in my jeep stroker build up.

You've got that backwards.

Forged are way stronger, not brittle at all.

Hypers are strong but brittle, detonation OWNS them

Stock are cast

Hypercraptastic are brittle and will get shattered by knock. Ford I think uses hypereutectic stock and a few others do as well.
Stock mazda cast are softer and not as strong. When they fail, they can let go of the rod, just like hypereutectic.
Forged are strong without being brittle. When they do fail, they fail without shattering and letting go of the rod.
