Boost Control w/2871 1.9L and mspnp ebc
So I am discovering that no matter what I do I am getting boost creep, up to 17psi on my built 1.9l w/ a gt2871 internally gated (3" dp, custom log mani)
No matter what I set the ebc settings to in ms if I down shift and go WOT it hits 15psi instantly and sometimes creeps a couple psi above that. If I just roll on the throttle sometimes it will hold at 7psi (wastegate) or creep to 9-10 I don't want to loosen the wastegate up and lose the low end response, should I be thinking of porting the wastegate hole in the turbine housing? Any ideas would be great as this high boost shit will literally kill me at the track |
Welcome to the joys of IWG. you need to convert to EWG or port your wastegate.

It can be done though. Just not ideal. Send me your turbo and we will port it at no charge.

You motor is built, just tune for 17 psi.

Stephanie buying my 2560 from them hehe |
IWG or EWG is something I'm on the fence about.
I thought I was set on going w/a 2560 because everybody's all jizzy about it, but with the S4 on a '99 and 3" exhaust, I'm pretty sure I can get the spool I want w/a 2860, and run a bit less boost overall for the power I want... which hopefully happens around 15psi... which means a ported IWG is probably sufficient, as that much boost will be on EBC, and 90% of my driving will be down around 7-8psi, or whatever it takes to get 200whp. DC, can you screen-shot a datalog to include spool data. Steph, how much more is the EWG option on the S4 and do you guys have a matching DP... I can't find the option on the website, although I do find a picture of an S4 mani w/an EWG flange. |
just tune for 20 psi and be done with it. Its not like your like me and the boost spikes lead to a ecu shutdown cause the map sensor cant read that high god i need to get the 5 bar sensor. lol Or get a weaker Wastegate on there.

FWIW I am running a 2871 with a BEGI ported IWG and a 12 psi IWG actuator. I have a 3" exhaust (Enthuza) and a separated gases downpipe (BEGI). I have the .64 A/R turbine housing. I am not having boost creep problems at either a 13 psi set point or a 20 psi set point.
I am running a hybrid EBC/MBC setup but the way I am using it probably has little to do with the steady boost levels. Take Steph up on her offer, or since you have a built motor just let it creep as suggested above. The latter option is easier and probably more fun. I think you probably have something wrong with the EBC though. Are you sure it is all installed correctly? If you set it to 100% DC across the board, it should just go up in boost until you hit the boost limiter. If it does not, something is definitely wrong. |
Steph since I'm in Canada I don't think sending my turbo half-way around the world to get it ported is a good idea, I appretiate the offer though.
The problem with running this much boost guys is that when I track the car this will not work. It literally will be to fast for the course we run, I only need 10-12psi and I will dominate my class like last year, 20psi is just to much for the track (with the tires and brakes I have anyways) I'm going to double check that ebc today because maybe I did screw it up somehow. Sam: my spool is't anything special actually, its either 7psi at 3500 or 15psi at 3500 depending on how I accelerate (downshift and wot or roll on onto it). |
You probably know this, but just to be sure, when you check your EBC at 100% DC, SET YOUR BOOST LIMITER OR YOU WILL PROBABLY BLOW UP YOUR MOTOR. Even though you have a built motor, the GT2871 can make a lot of boost.
At 100% DC it should just build boost until you hit the boost limiter, as if the wastegate is not connected at all to the post-turbo charge piping (pre-throttle body). At 0% DC it should work like there is no EBC and the wastegate is just connected directly to the post-turbo charge piping (pre-throttle body). |
Internal gates are just dumb, I wish I had known what I knew now before I ordered 2-years ago. I can't make less than 15psi

Haha ya I know ZX- thanks anyhow.
I've been playing around with it letting the wife drive and f I set the targets for low it kinda works lol. I def need to port this turbo though, oh ya 20psi feels pretty good but makes Z06 owners mad :( |
