Is this BOV real?

I've been looking for a BOV and recently saw this one: New HKS Universal SSQV SQV Version IV 4 Turbo Pull Type Blow Off Valve BOV | eBay

I know, if it seems too good to be true, it probably is, but the seller describes it as a true HKS made in japan, and the pictures show the copyright symbol on the logo and a hologram and everything else, so I snatched it up. (US Seller, too).

Well, I had a friend who was suspicious and so I did some more digging, and it doesn't look like HKS ever even MADE a black SSQV 4..

I contacted the seller about the false description and they're trying to convince me that it is in fact the real deal and giving me the run around saying they'll have to talk to their manager and whatnot..

It's a fake, right? :(

HKS USA Super SQV4

Leafy 03-27-2014 08:29 AM

Why not call/email HKS and see? $80 seems pretty expensive for a BOV that isnt exactly top of the line even if it isnt a knockoff.

mlev 03-27-2014 08:36 AM

Err, true HKS SSQV4 are over $300 at the cheapest usually. I'm honestly not really sure what I was thinking when I thought it could be real.

It's also cheaper than anything HKS has ever actually made. Ever.

I'm pretty sure the old HKS beach towels were more expensive than that.

Leafy 03-27-2014 09:40 AM

I'd probably return it then. Of course I've always thought that HKS BOVs sounded retarded anyways.

I still want to see someone use one of these on a car. They dont have air pressure pushing against the piston so the spring can be really light and have it still not leak boost. Downside seems to be they're hard to make seal when off boost because the manifold vacuum pulls them open (because of that super light spring). At least they dont whistle when they leak under vac. I was going to run one... but the EFR came out and comes with its own BOV.

18psi 03-27-2014 09:42 AM

yep its fake. for like 20 more you coulda bought a legit forge or turbosmart which is a piston style, and way way better.

enjoy sounding like a ricer (unless you plan to take out the "whistle tip")

The item hasn't actually shipped yet. I'm working with the seller to try to cancel the purchase before they ship it.

Seeing as how the description was false, even if they refuse to refund my money, I'm covered under eBay buyer protection, so I'm not concerned about getting my money back, it's just a hassle now.

Lesson learned.. I am a :loser:

If I had gotten it, I was planning to remove the 'Triple fin" adaptor that gives it the "JDM SOUND YO".

The purchase is being cancelled. The item has not yet shipped.

Alpod 03-27-2014 09:51 AM

Also, even if it shipped, you could just contact HKS to verify it's fake and then eBay and/or paypal would make sure you get your money back.

18psi 03-27-2014 09:53 AM

Well that's good. Don't get it. Tell him to stick his "real JDM ssqv" up his butt

Pretty much this. It's in everyone's best interest for them to just cancel the order. They have already replied to me before the item shipped so they can't even just pretend they never saw it.

According to HKSs website there's no such thing as a black HKS SSQV4, so worst case scenario I'll be covered by ebay buyer protection.. Just don't want to deal with the hassle. This is the LAST part I need for my install. I'm planning to swap my clutch out and transition to MS this weekend, and spend a bit (a lot) of time tuning, and then its TURBO TIME.

mlev 03-27-2014 10:33 AM

Man, I've been looking at those inline bovs a bit more, and that is a really cool concept. I've never seen that before. I wish I could find at least one person out there who has tried it.. $150 is a bigger gamble than buying a $30 eBay knockoff and tossing it in the trash if it doesn't work...

Full_Tilt_Boogie 03-27-2014 10:36 AM

Even if it was real idk why you would want that ricer piece of shit

18psi 03-27-2014 10:37 AM

begi and fm used to use inline bov's on their earlier kits.

they stopped using them and now use bosch/forge/turbosmart. everyone else stays away from them too. its nothing new

they're not as cool as you think

be very very careful when listening to Leafy because about 80% of what he posts is just hypothetical crap he's wondering about, not some radical new concept or idea, or anything proven/reliable. he's a dreamer lol

Because there some advantages to a sequential bov, and if you remove the "triple fin" it quiets down a lot.

You may say he's a dreamer
But he's not the only one
I hope some day that you will join us
And MiataTurbo can be as one.

18psi 03-27-2014 10:41 AM

the advantages are nowhere near as cool as HKS makes them out to be, and on a speed density car they're downright pointless

also you can get a dual piston forge for like 100 new, which functions the same but not huge bulky and gay

Shush, you. I want to see one of those inline bovs on something that isnt a supra already. Because they seem theoretically awesome. :dealwithit:

Yes. ;)

Where are these genuine dual piston bovs for ~$100? My Google fu is weak today, and I'm gunshy from this knockoff hks.

All this BOV talk, lol

At least they can hear theirs. I can only hear mine with the hood off. Maybe the new intake will be louder.

concealer404 03-27-2014 11:21 AM

Bah, i roll a circa ~1990 HKS BOV Type 1 "Racing" or whatever the fuck. Enormous piston. Looks huge in the engine bay. Uses "Greddy" flange. (Which fun fact, was HKS first... Greddy stole the design, so HKS changed)

It's dead quiet and awesome.

I picked up a used Turbosmart Kompact Dual Port for under $100 shipped here in the classifieds. It's a single piston but meh? It's in perfect shape after a little disassembly, cleanup and lube. It needs a fitting for the plumb-back portion I want to use (I need quiet/silent) but its still going to end up under $100 in the end.

Pick a brand/part number and start looking somewhere other than eBay.

mlev 03-27-2014 01:31 PM

I should probably just pick up a dsm 1g and call it done, but they're all so nasty looking. I know form follows function, but mehhh.

blaen99 03-27-2014 01:31 PM

I picked up a new DSM 1g replacement from Forge for $120...

Just sayin'.

EO2K 03-27-2014 01:33 PM

Yeah, the Turbosmart Bosch replacement ones are like $120 new as well.

Hell, if you want to be a cheap bastard, just get a plastic Bosch one. It should work fine for a while if you just want to throw it together and get it running.

krissetsfire 03-27-2014 03:37 PM

I had a blitz and I kept getting some surge. I switched to this super JDM TYYTTTEEEE NGR bov and it works really well. It sounds super gay though. It's basically a greddy type-s.

I ordered one thinking it would be brand new... I think all ngr does is buy up greddy bov's put their own replacement diaphragms in and run them across a buffing wheel. Not impressed because they give the impression of them being new. I bitched though and they gave me some extra parts and a new one (still not new). They must think everyone is stupid to not notice the bad buff job. ANYWAY. Works perfect. ~$150.

mlev 03-28-2014 08:57 AM

Well, the seller refunded my money, so that's nice.

However, along with it was a message that they double checked with their supplier, and these *are* in fact genuine HKS Super SSQV IV blow off valves--it's just that they have been re-painted by a third-party, and that I'm wrong about them being knockoffs.

Soooo if anyone wants a genuine, custom painted, HKS SSQV IV for about 20% MSRP you know where to find it.

concealer404 03-28-2014 09:18 AM

LOL.

Suuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuure.

Shady fucks.

uavjeep 03-28-2014 07:44 PM

honestly I have run those super tyte jdm hks knocks off for a couple years (without whistle fins) and ended up having to run two at a time to prevent surge (stupid move) and have gone through 4!! of them in the past 3 years. this year bought a Tial Q looking forward to set it and forget it reliability.
