Is this carbon buildup?

See the buildup inside the port, is that carbon build up? |
yes
|
Yeah that would be it.
This is what you want... http://img50.imageshack.us/img50/284...1676vu5.th.jpg |
^ Yea, id like it to be like that too but I cant take my engine apart just quite yet.
I am also guessing its permanent. I am curious though, how does it become so uniform, what causes it to adhere to the surface and will it continue building like that forever? |
Carbon buildup is not permanent. It can be removed several ways.
|
I know its not permanent, but its also cannot removed without removing the head. Unless it can?
|
Its just a biprotect from fossil fuel, but what makes it worst is oil burn from bad rings and breather recerc (reason for catch cans) or from burning to rich off AF/R will cause carbon deposits.
|
Run water injection, it will clean the engine up over time. So will nitrous, and it has the added benefit of sealing up the rings too.
|
Water injection huh. Something to consider for the future.
What about this, how much loss of power is there due to the build up? Whats the worst carbon buildup known to date? Any pictures? I am just curious, how bad can it really get. |
I'm pretty sure it was on here, but there was a write up of how to pull a vacuum line and suck water in. It helps clean out the engine like water injection. I tried it on my Honda, I didn't notice anything though.
|
/\seafoam is supposed to do that, don't know if it works
|
watermeth!
|
You can run "water injection" by just sucking up water while the car is sitting there. It might not clean up the exhaust ports but it will take care of your combustion chambers anyway.
Don't worry about it sam, the power difference is pretty meaningless for a street car and no it's not going to get much worse unless you run 11:1 all the time and start burning tons of oil. |
The worst it can get? Look into VW TDI's. Their intake manifolds can lose half their volume by 150k miles just from carbon build up. Not a pretty picture.
