Change of plans

Hey guys, well after losing my job and going back to school full time my plan for 350 HP is out of the ballpark for me now. So This is what I was thinking, bear with me. This is for my 1990 1.6l with 130,xxx miles on it. No P/S, no A/C.

1. I have a turbo off some sort of Chrysler, I went to TurboDodge.com to find some info on it. This is what I was told, "Looks like standard Garrett TII turbo, which is a T3 with 50 trim compressor wheel, .42 compressor housing, stage 1 turbine wheel, .48 Chrysler flange turbine housing." The turbo is a new replacement turbo that has never been used, although it has been sitting for sometime. They advised me to pick up a rebuild kit and go through it changing seals and o-rings. That'd be about $80 for the kit. What do you think of using that turbo?

2. For the FMIC I was thinking an ebay one, cheap and it seems alot of you guys have good success with them.

3. I have been in communication with SKMetalworks (Stan) about a log manifold and a DP. Pricing seems fair enough. Probably going to go that route. Any takes?

4. Probably pick up a MegaSquirt. Probably the one that comes as a kit.

5. Pick up some kind of injectors.

Am I missing anything? If I can hit 200 HP with this I would be satisfied. Again, not looking for those high HP numbers, just wanting to have some fun with some boost.

Thanks,
Ryan

Wideband.

RyanRaduechel 01-18-2010 03:21 PM

So a wideband o2. Other than that, am I in the right track for what I am trying to accomplish? Just a fun streetable car. I know I will be needing a radiator, mine is shot. I would have to do that anyways regardless. I am planning on running the clutch and rear end thats in it for now. And if it goes out then I will consider upgrading them to something a little better than OEM stuff.

No no, you need to include the clutch and rear end in the build price, and possibly a transmission, although they last much longer then the diffs. Plan on $200 for injectors, $100 for a used set and $100 to have them rebuilt. The MS's built by members of this board will be cheaper, but still around $500. What's sk quoting you for the mani/dp? $500? So that's $1200, say $300 for a clutch and another $300 for a 1.8 open diff, $150 or so for an eBay intercooler kit, $180 for radiator and $200 for misc stuff. That's About $2300, assuming you don't fuck anything up and find some real deals. Can you still afford it?

curly 01-18-2010 04:44 PM

Oh yeah, and $200ish for the wb.

RyanRaduechel 01-18-2010 10:29 PM

Yeah that price is do-able. Maybe not all at once but it can be done in a lot shorter time. And for the MS I was planning on doing that myself. So if I can save myself $500 from that then thats good. It has a new clutch in it, although it was just an OEM replacement clutch, would need something to handle some more HP most likely. I havent added the two prices together for the mani and DP but it would probably be around that area of pricing. And what is the wb? I am raking my brain trying to think of it lol

Wideband. I'd suggest AEM UEGO, can be had on eBay for about $185 shipped.

I just disconnected my wastegate until I get my 440cc injectors repaired, but I still get about 5psi very slowly way up at redline. MS say's it's pretty safe with my stock 1.8 injectors (265cc) going only as high as 80% duty cycle. I bet the stock clutch would hold that, along with the diff, since there's no boost/power at lower speeds (aka, launch territory). Just kind of thought of it today, might be worth it. Then later on you can do a clutch, then wait a bit for injectors, then later once your base tune is good, hook the wastegate up. Could even go intercoolerless for a bit. I used the stock plastic crossover for a while with my greddy. With zip ties on the accordion piece, it keeps from expanding.

With carefully planned baby steps, you could end up with a good setup without wasting money on interim parts. Key word: planned.

SKMetalworks 01-19-2010 12:23 AM

Its always fun to start out small and make your mistakes on a lower power setup. Then, once you learn from your mistakes built motor, 3071?, tubular manifold and love it.

RyanRaduechel 01-19-2010 02:21 AM

That sounds like a good plan curly, Im not really planning on launching it and beating the hell out of it (well once its all said and done then maybe I will launch it and beat on it a bit) but for now I would just like to get a basic setup going. So I can hear the sound of a turbo and say that my Miata has a turbo lol. I will take some better pics of the turbo and post them up tomorrow. That way you guys can take a look at it. So this is what I am thinking for my base, base turbo.

1. rebuild the turbo I have
2. no intercooler (for now)
3. pick up some RX-7 or 1.8 injectors
4. MS

Baby it for a while and disconnect the WG. Tomorrow afternoon, maybe evening I will get the pics put up.
