Cheap quick spool = T25?
So I'm in the process of building a cheap, quick-spooling setup on my 1.6. The goal is to become better acquinted with boost on a Miata before dumping a bunch of money into it. What do you guys think about a used dsm T25 that I reuild and use until I decide what I REALLY want to do to my car?

I think the only problem with the DSM t25 is that there not really a manifold to bolt it up to, most t25s we have and that I'm going to use are standard garretts (From Nissan turbo motors....SR20DET, CA18DET, maybe some others)
theres a thread around here somewhere that shows the difference.

Yeah, I know about the differences in flanges. I'm thinking a dsm t25 might be the ticket with an ebay downpipe/manifold as a preliminary setup to learn and figure out how the Miata responds to boost. Then I'd decide what direction I'd want to go. I don't really want to commit to an expensive manifold/downpipe until I get the feel for a boosted Miata and can make a better decision to fit me.

magnamx-5 has hit it right on the nose here. Seems like a cheap way to buy into the turbo world. So one question about the DSM turbos: are they internal or wastegated? Would seem like internal, as I don't see any wastegate flange on DSM manifolds.

So, to recap. Stock T25's from SR20det's and 2g DSM's are the same .48/.49. As you said, the DSM turbine housings are kinda weird and NOBODY respectable makes a production model Mani or DP to fit it. However, the SR20det turbo is a standard T25 turbine inlet and standard 5-bolt outlet. Begi makes both Mani's and DP's for those (I own both). I'm sure you could get Corky to weld you up whatever... but it's harder that way.
So, NO DSM T25 tubine housings... unless you can weld or have somebody weld up a custom DP and Mani or wanna try cheap eBay crap.
So, YES SR20det T25 turbine housings, which everybody makes Mani's and DP's for which more expensive.
The DSM compressor housings are kinda cool though with the bend in them that takes a lot of pain out of IC piping. The SR20det compressor housings are usually flanged at both the inlet and outlet and require adapters that NEVER come on a used turbo... the sellers sell them seperate and they usually ask $40.
So, check out the pic below. On the top left is a generic Garrett .48 T25 compressor housing. The outlet is 2" and the inlet is 2 1/8" which is why I didn't use it. The other parts are all 2g DSM. All of those parts are fully interchangable with an SR20det. The stock DSM wastegate will also not work without a bracket modification after you've clocked the thing. You can see that the turbine inlet has also been heavily ported. These are all parts I've got left over from the 4 turbos I bought.
Let me know if you've got any more questions.

Sometimes you guys make the T3 out to be this exotic turbo. They are dirt cheap,EVERYONE has turbine intlet and outlet flanges for fabrication, gaskets and oil feed/return parts are sold at ever "Turbo" store, and you have an outstanding up grade path.

I've had trouble finding SR20det turbos, but besides that, I really can't justify spending almost as much on a mani/dp as I did on the whole car ($1000). It's a toy to me, not a daily driver, so it's all experimentation. I may just give the ebay crap a try for $200...but I'm not sold yet.

If you're set on a DSM, I'll be selling all my spare parts in a week or so, but probably more $$$ individually than you could get a complete blown one for.
Not sure if you can see these if you're not registered:

I just checked through the SR20 forums and nothing jumped out at me.
Over to you on the money thing. If you get one of those eBay manifolds to fit right, let alone a few thousand miles on one, I think you'll set a record around here. You're right about DP's... anybody can make one that will work... but Mani's are a different story.

Thanks Sam. I'll have to keep an eye on that site's classifieds. I have been following your setup closely and really like it.
Since buying my Miata in January, boosting it is all i can think about
