We have recently started making weekly vids about all things MX5.


This weeks is about an external waste gate setup we built for our Evolution2 manifolds.


I know you guys have got a reputation for being ruthless so i may regret saying this but, let us know what you think and if you fancy subscribing to see more we would really appreciate it.

I think you have 5 posts since 2013 and haven't tried to contribute any information to the forum. You've tried to sell us something twice already, though.

Hey Sixshooter,

I'm not trying to sell you anything here. I just thought people would like the video as it is Miata turbo related and hopefully entertaining. Did you watch it? Next Saturday's video is about how to buy and check a used turbo.

I did watch it. You seem like a decent fellow and we'd be happy to have you as a vendor.

I'm not seeing the reason for the extra effort and expense to remove a functioning wastegate to then add another. I also don't like open wastegates and hood exits. The noise is annoying and can unnecessarily attract law enforcement attention. I hate to eat carbon monoxide and other noxious gasses but I understand that is a novelty that some kids enjoy. Different strokes and all that.

Nice to put a face to the company.
As Matt seems works at Hybrid Tune he must have known the gearbox was going to go quick.
Odd he didn't just lower the boost until he could source a better box given its a daily driver.
What was this mapped with given the G19 kit?

Still hood flames seem quite fun.

Do you mean to say that putting your company name in your username and posting videos with your company and product all over it aren't means of advertising? That sounds implausible to me.

The wastegate on the cheop TD05 is too small and the idea was to try and see if we could junk the flap valve, port the whole and use the EWG to get rid of the boost creep.

I am also a bit worried about the fumes. I think the gases will stick to the bonnet and then windshield and then the vortecies from the top of the winshield will send them into the cabin when the roof is down. However, Matt is a big boy and with that comes self responsability. It does sound cool too.

Yes, Matt works at Hybrid. It had another gearbox in it the very next day. Do you mean what ECU was used? It was MS PnP.

I drove a hood exit exhaust car for about 6 minutes and my eyes were watering and my clothes smelled like exhaust for the rest of the day. I cannot imagine actually enjoying that for any length of time. I prefer practical hacks over impractical ones.

running the exhaust through the hood isn't a hack, it's just lazy for hardpark points.

I am sorry, but I did not find the video entertaining nor informative.

If you want to make it more informative / educational you need to put more production time and effort into filming all the details and doing a good voice-over.
Take the project binky as an example, I think those videos are the pinnacle of entertaining while at the same time being very informative.
Please bear in mind the effort required: any kind of workshop work will most likely take twice the amount of time, so you have to invest in it.

If you want to make it more of an entertainment thingy, have a look at the car throttle MX-5 turbo / V6 series or the Lexus IS200 / 330d series.
In those videos you work really towards a goal and the flow is much more entertaining.
The part where you compared the MX-5 to some of the (far superior) new cars out there was absolutely cringe worthy in my opinion.

But on the flipside: you seem to have put some time/effort into the production already and I think you are absolutely capable of putting together better videos.
Maybe not try to weekly slap something together, but rather focus on bringing out stuff worth to watch less often :)

Much better than I could have done or would have done or would be motivated to do so I've got no problem with that.

The higher horse cars comparison was a bit of a stretch for me, too. If doing it at all I would have included a metric of weight and done a power to weight ratio comparison between them. But I'm not interested in poking every little thing with a stick.

I dont understand how your EWG works, i mean you have the tial ewg past the turbine wheel, on the downpipe flange.
the wastegate needs to be before the turbine wheel to let the air bypass the wheel, the way you have it, the exhaust already spooled up the turbine, and all your wastegate is doing is acting like an exhaust cut out.

or the ewg pipe that goes through the exhaust flange, is welded to where the flap used to be?

It is sealed to the port.

You do realise the car throttle stuff is filmed by a production team? Full time employees that are professional video producers. By the time they write it, organise it, film it, edit it, colour grade, make thumbnail etc I expect there are 200-300 man hours in every car throttle episode.

The project Binky guys manage one video every 6 months? Maybe even a year?

Even at the level I am making video at there is roughly 2-3 hours of work for every minute of video. So a 4 min video takes a day to produce. All the evidence shows that not releasing videos regularly is not effective in building an audience.

You might have not enjoyed our video, but plenty do. I have no grand designs on perfect production. I do the best I can in the time I have. If I spent the time required for car throttle type production my business would fail, my wife would leave me and my kids would wonder who this strange man was when I finally come home!

Yes I completely realize that completely and I had no intentions to talk down your efforts. I completely agree with sixshooter in the fact that I appreciate the effort.
So no reason to defend yourself :)

What I was trying to say is why I personally did not really enjoy it and trying to explain where I think you could make stuff better.
I think building the external waste gate onto the cast manifold is interesting,
I hope you understand that comparing a rusty MX-5 which will probably fail an MOT with brand new cars is a bit pointless and does not add anything to the video.
If you would have spent the time of that shot on some good shots of the manifold setup it would have made it a much nicer video in my opinion.
The references are just there to give you an idea. Maybe have a look at "the car passion channel" or "Toms turbo garage" or "Jafromobile" which are also limited in production resources, but those channels I really enjoy watching.
And I personally do not care about how often you bring new content, I much rather like interesting and educational stuff than regular vlogger stuff.
But maybe I am just an old fart and the majority of people like vlogger content :dunno: This is the internet, so you can do whatever you like. Try to take the lesson out of what people say and define your own way, focus your energy on what you are doing, no reason to defend yourself. If you like feedback on your videos, keep posting them here :)

I can appreciate the time and effort that goes into a video like this, good job. I am running an evo 3 16g this year with an EWG setup the same way. TD05's are notorious for their boost creep and fluctuation, DSM guys have been setting the EWG's up like this for a long time. Only thing I'm not a fan of is the hood dump.

This is a cheap TD05 and even with the EWG and the wastegate hole ported a bit it still creeps a bit. Next step is the have the turbine housing back off, throw it on the mill and enlarge the hole further. I'm not a huge fan of the hood dump either but so far Matt says he has not got a headache every time he drives it. Mind you he works on a dyno every day so has probably become immune to exhaust gas poisoning!
