'96 1.8L - check
HKS manifold - check T25G from S13 SR20DET - check Intercooler - check WI - check Voodoo Box - check Custom downpipe - check Now... The scary part - where do I tap oil pan? Do I need to take it out? What kind of oil lines do I need? Also... do I need timing control? |
FM have pics of tapping the pan. No you do not need to take it out, just take your time with it and make sure to get all the metal shavings out while drilling. Dunno about oil lines, depends on your Turbo setup etc. Yes you need timing control, unless you want to stay down at 6 degress.
Hooray! Somebody else is going to be running a voodoo box! On a 96 no less.
I have a bipes that I plan on running with my voodoo box once my turbo is on to keep the base timing up. And I know it's kind of blasphemy, but the instructions for the FM turbo kits show you where to drill the hole for the oil line, and seem to have pictures of the parts needed. I found them very informative. Good luck. -Gah, Fergus you beat me to it. |
how good is voodoo box? i have megasquirt laying around but its going together with my supercharger to some lucky bastard.
Well I don't actually have the turbo or voodoo box on the car yet, but I chose it for simplicity, and from what I can tell a good bit of tuneability for such a simple system(no messing with laptops). I'm also going to run 305cc injectors though so I can get a bit more power.
exactly what i want to do - 305s!
Damn, we are going to be running almost identical setups. Just the hardware will differ a little. It will be interesting to see how our setups compare in the end. Man I want my stuff to arrive!
haha! we should meet up somewhere... i am in marina del rey every single day and its not that far from you :)
Ya some time for sure. I go to school in Santa Monica so not that far at all. Although I am dreading going back to school...
hehe... im currently on contract with company on lincoln / washington. 5 minutes from smc
Urban for someone with your skill why not assemble a new MS and run that. So you have some headroom either way it will be alot more powerfull than your m45 ever was. For oil lines i love to use braided stainless teflon inner lines from my local hydrolick store they cant get pricey but they dont/wont buldge, are smooth so they wont clog and i don't have to worry about anything but how tight my fittings are.
megasquirt is running out of my budget for this build. maybe later ill go megasquirt. afterall i already have "powered my megasquirt" license plate frame :)
do you need a FPR? it does not get simpler than that.
nah, i think voodoo box takes care of it. just need to get bipes cheap somewhere - im completely off my budget! i think im around $1500 off so far :/
OMG $1500!!!! holy shit thats ... umm ... um ... well thats actually not that much for what you are trying to do. Some people have done it cheaper, but not everyone can. Its good to try to be frugal but also its nice to do it once, do it right and not have to do it again eh?
yeah, well... here is my shopping list:
- hks mani (new) + sr20det t25g - $400 - voodoo box - $415 - bipes - $200? - intercooler w/ piping - $285 - WI - $180 - oil/water lines - $50-80? - wideband - $180 - downpipe - $40 - misc welding, hoses, gaskets, etc - $150 installation - will do it at my friends shop so its basically free or at nominal fee for whatever parts i will need while im there. |
or... i can just get fm iv system i have good deal on ;)
I'd look for a used voodoo box, I got mine (when it arrives) for $250, that will open up your budget a good bit.
I'd also sort of say the same for the bipes. They seem to go for a bit less than 200 usually, got mine for 180, and I think that price was on the high end of things. And what exhaust do you plan on running after the downpipe? Thats whats biting me in the ass right now. I think I'll end up attempting to weld my own system together as a 3" setup. Although the enthuza stuff looks really nice but is a lot of $$. Gut luck. |
i have crush-bent (not too bad) 2.5" system right now w/ cat and resonator.
now... $1700 shipped for FM IV w/ 11lbs tial wastegate - is that a good deal? thats without any electronics. i already bought voodoo box directly from FM end of last week. so do you guys think i should go for FM IV or custom setup? the only thing im afraid of is my engine blowing up from 11psi of boost on t3/t4 hybrid... and spool time too |
fm iv will not fly :/
i talked to keith and he told me i wont be able to run more then 3-4psi with voodoo box / bipes setup :) |
You mean only with system (the IV)? Because I know that people have run much more than that with the voodoo bipes combo. But not specifically on that system. Why such low boost?
keith told me stock injectors wont do safely for more boost and that i cant replace injectors with voodoo box :/
although ive seen people run 305s with it and they claimed stoich @ idle. i dont know... :/ |
300's should be no problem going higher is gonna suck though either way 10 psi properly tuned will max out the voodoo easy. Hell by 9 psi with the right IC'ing or WI will max out 305's.
Wierd, did he say this just for the FM IV kit? I heard other people say that you could only run stockers, but then I asked fm and they said that you can run 305's b/c all the voodoo box does is lenthen pulses in boost. And I know that you can idle 305's on the stock ecu.
well... if someone buys my supercharger with voodoo box im going megasquirt again. now i will have to pocket out $300 for tuning :/
Street tuning would be enough for a long while. There are good timing maps for MS available for the 1.8 in turbo form and you can tune fuel with a wideband.
im just not too confident enough to tune megasquirt myself. i have never done tuning before so i dont even know where to start!
You take a datalog and let MLV make the adjustments for you. Or you use autotune in Megatune while you drive. It's not as hard as you think.
hehe, ok :)
now... what kind of injectors do i need to reach my goal of 240whp? is it at all possible with my t25g setup? are there any better turbos to use on that manifold? i know that t25g is pretty limited. i never heard of anyone making more then 250whp on that turbo :/ |
oh... and im getting new wheels - 15x8 sportmax 002s silver. for dirt cheap. brand new. i can get a set for $340 if anyone is interested. falken azenis to go with them are $80/ea.
crap, i have to postpone this turbo build for few weeks :/
i just bought tein basic coilovers and tomei 2-way diff + those sportmax wheels and completely blew my budget :) |

Well if it's any consolation, my FM kit is taking its sweet time to get to me. I was hoping to get this done during the summer!:vash:
And it's too bad that your not using the voodoo box. It's so wierd how lots of people say that it sucks the most enormous balls, and others say that it is a great simple tuning solution. I mean, one guy is running 194whp on one with stock injectors, but I understand that it isn't an ideal final solution if you plan on making big power in the long run. With that said, I plan on going ms a little down the road as well to get to my goal of ~240whp(funny it's the same!), but like soot, I wanted to start with the simple voodoo box because I don't have the slightest clue how to tune an ecu and wouldn't know where to begin. |
In the time you've been waiting you could have learned the basics of how to practically tune megasquirt.
haha... i skimmed through tons of info and thats what makes me scared of tuning. all the warnings everywhere make me very nervous - i dont want to spend another $3k on rebuild! (yeah, i would build my engine while its open)
but again... my supercharger is still on the car and it will be there for a week or 2 until i get a promised down payment for it :)
so 7.5psi jrsc + voodoo for now until i get my turbo situation sorted out. in the meantime i will finish up my suspension, carpc, and crap like that. i still have to do a lot of interior work and fabrications so my carpc looks good :) |
Tunning is simple, i hate parts falling off :(
i would imagine :)
i just couldnt resist...
- turbo setup (turbo, intake, manifold, down pipe, intercooler, piping, blow-off, wastegate) without FMU and injectors - oil catch can - turbo timer - steering wheel + quick-release hub - carbon fiber fuel lid $1650 shipped!!!! |
sweet deal Man now iimpress us with your carpc equiped supercar :D I cant wait to see the results/
i took out carpc from it for now. still not sure what setup to go with :)
i just got a whole bunch of accessories for car computers - usb adapters, wifi cards, bluetooth cards, cf card modules, and cf cards. $3k worth of shit basically :) |
oh yeah, turbo is t3/t4, custom manifold, greddy intercooler.
now... i still need to sell that supercharger! eh... and i still need to get some minor body work done as well as air dam, fender flares, suspension, differential, paint, new roll bar, and crap like that. any idea how long my exedy oem replacement will live with t3/t4? im shooting for 250ish |
oh yeah... and car will be for sale this november or december. i want to trade in my rsx type s for mazdaspeed nb :)
crap, unlucky me - i realized i dont have enough $$ on my account right now so i have to back off from that deal for a little bit :/
That sucks, but it sounds like your car will be very complete when it's finished. I want a torsen so bad, but $$ is a pain, but it seems like you know that all too well.
Quick release hub FTW! I really want one, but the looming fact that I run canyons makes a no air bag wheel quite unattractive. And from what I've heard the exedy only holds a tad more power than stock, so I doubt that it would cut it for 250. |
beh, im gonna run 200whp until this clutch dies and then go to 250ish with new clutch. at least thats the plan.
wheels are coming this week!! |
