chinacharger t3

Twelve years ago I got advice on a turbo from a shop that didn't have experience with miatas and purchased a t3/t4 turbo compressor 47/70 and turbine 51/64 which is obviously way to big for my stock 1.8L engine with 2.5" exhaust. I have been driving the car a lot the past year and running low boost on a stock motor with this turbo is miserable. Hell any boost level on this turbo is probably miserable, but without a built motor and more boost its just stupid. Here is a datalog showing what spool on this setup looks like which starts at 2100 rpm and it reaches 7 psi at 3816.

I was planning to purchase an efr 6758 turbo kit from trackspeed in the next 4-6 months after finally graduating school and returning to work. However, I removed the turbo yesterday and it has some side to side play and has been touching the compressor housing.

So I am now considering buying a chinacharger to improve my spool and give me more time to get everything else I need for my car sorted out before I change to a good turbo kit. Here is the link to the turbo I am considering any input would be greatly appreciated.

How will you control boost with that china turbo if there is no iwg and everyone on here is to cheap for a ewg to have good boost control.

kww502 05-01-2016 01:30 PM

I already have a tial external wastegate on a begi manifold dumped to atmosphere.

Shortpersonbk 05-01-2016 01:41 PM

Yay for being able to control boost.

Also you do know that the efr6758 is actually a larger turbo then what you already have on right by a bit.

It is a 52mm turbo ish if i remember correctly.
What about something like this?

The s200 chassis borgs are almost half the price of a efr and while it my not perform as well it will at least be reliable and i assume will be better then what ever you have on it already.

This turbo will be world's better than the pos you were reccomened.

Shortpersonbk 05-01-2016 06:06 PM

I do not see whats wrong with small chassis borgs....is it as nice as the borg efr stuff no but its half the cost and for future power upgrades there are tons of billet wheel options, turbine wheel sizes, race covers, different size hotsides ect to mix and match to make a combo that fits you.

7psi at 3800 is not that bad. my 2860 reaches 10psi at like 4500

7psi at 3800 is horrible. Even on a 1.6L, your turbo should be fully spooled by 4K when the cam hits. Looking at his log his turbo still had yet to start making boost exponentially. Sad pathetic no-thrills turbo setup.

It suggests he makes no torque, and is running the turbo at about 1/20th the power it's rated for. AREA UNDER CURVE is important.

and remember, just making the boost means nothing if the turbo is outside any efficiency range to make any output:

boost threshold is the same, yet the larger trim wheel just didn't lend itself to any mid-range power.

Brain is correct this turbo isn't even starting to breath yet and was originally intended to be ran on a built motor at a higher boost level. I still wish I would have originally bought something a little smaller, but you live and learn. It's miserable riding around with a large turbo at low boost and not even getting the top end benefit. I ran a similar turbo on a gsr integra at 17psi and made 378 whp. I wonder how much a 3" downpipe and exhaust would improve spool over my current 2.5 exhaust. I am considering building a 3" exhaust putting it on datalogging to see how much better this turbo would spool and then switching over to the t3 chinacharger, for better response.

the red plot above is the same 50 trim T3 you linked, fwiw.
