Clutch Question!!
hey i was wondering what kind of cluch do i need for my turbo set up
i think i'm going to be running about 200 to 230 hp.. |

oh i looked at the act xt 6 puck looks pretty nice it's just a little expensive

you don't really need the 6-puck version which adds a bit of cost. prostreeonline.com and caroline clutch typically have the best prices.
or you can go for something from clutchnet. get the red PP with the yellow standard clutch disc, that should be plenty, save you bucks. or the F1 6-puck kits on ebay for $150 |

What's the pedal feel with the XD? Is it a full face disk or a puck?

HD = feels like stock, clutch engages close to the floor. can hold a good amount of torque on a 1.8L
XT = increased pedal effort. can hold almost anything you throw at it. |
i'm looking for something that won't kill my calf but still be able to hold a decent amount of power

the ebay clutch will hold 220-230 whp pretty easily. And has a soft as stock PP.

Is there anyone using the ebay F1 @ 12psi with any success? Seems like a great deal if it lives up to the ad.

I used it and it started sliping around 14 psi. And it was all downhill from there.

the problem with the F1 kit is that the PP is an OEM replacement, the disc however is a nice disc. NeoGenesis was running his at 190hp/170tq without issues.
easy solution, buy the same disc from clutchnet.com and couple it with their stronger (Red or yellow) PP. |
I got the F1 Stage III with oh about 3k miles on it now. It makes some squeel/groan noise starting from a stop which is a bit of a pain in the ass. It's hilly here and I usually hold the e-brake when I'm at a stoplight uphill to keep the chatter down to a reasonable level.
Running 8psi now and it holds just fine. Gonna be bumping it up to 12 sometime this month hopefully. If I could go back, I probably would have just gone with something more reputable honestly. |
So is the 1.8L clutch that much better to get? What do you have to replace to make it fit on a 1.6L? Clutch, PP and flywheel?

How come you guys recommend ACT and not one of the other companies, like centerforce or exedy?

Cause it's proven.
I'm running the centerforce dual friction now...ill probably be pulling the clutch disc this spring. I don't think anyone here has tried the DFX. exedy doesn't make anything worthwhile but stock. Spec clutches have a quality control issue. Clutchnet.com stuff is good Competition clutch stuff is good but the problem is this, we all run lots of torque and a lot of these manufacturers don't A. list the clamping force of the PP B. list the torque load of the clutch kit. ACT does, and there are little to no complaints when people use them. |

I am also running the ebay F-1 stage 3 in my car at 9psi and it has held well. The only bad part is that it chatters pretty bad from a stop......pretty annoying but worth the $$ if you dont drive it every day.

The HD/street is only rated for 233, but lots of guys use it for 230+ without issues. I'm using an HD/6-puck which is rated for 298.
I don't think I've ever heard of an issue from someone using an ACT clutch. Mine has been totally bulletproof. 5000rpm clutchdrops, burnouts, hard 1-2s, chirping 4th gear, and it just takes it like a champ. Kyle, we should compare. Mine chatters on occasion, but only when I'm lazy with the engagement. Once you get used to it, you learn how to get rid of the chatter. |
I'm running the ebay, XTD stage 3, 6 puck and the chatter is insane, i can make it NOT chatter, but the only cure is driving it REALLY hard from a take off, i think my engine mounts were going bad even before i put the clutch on, but i have some mazda-comps on the way, i HOPE it helps, otherwise im getting one of those ebay torque damper thingies,
and if even THAT doesnt help ill just fu**in make some solid motor mounts out of derlin because i cant seem to find any anwyhere. |
The XTD flywheel is 9lb ,The ACT is 10lb maby that is the difference because the friction material is the same. The only other thing could be stiffer dampening springs in the pressure plate.
But if it's true , From what I can find out, the opinion is that like heaps of other stuff the XTD and ACT clutches and flywheels are made in the same factory and painted different colours. Please correct me if you know for sure that I'm wrong. Col |
Sorry That should have been stronger springs in the clutch plate ( friction disc).
