clutch recomendation

so im looking to get a clutch set for 1.8, any recomendations? i was looking at the ebay kits. i for sure want a ebay f1 chromemoly flywheel, but the stage 3 kits only seem to be good for 285 ftlb. flyin miata stuff is exspensive and doesnt seem like it holds any better then the ebay clutches.

magnamx-5 02-17-2010 12:25 AM

yeah ebay stuff wont like life past 250 for a 1.6 and probly 270 or so for a 1.8, go to prostreetonline.com and mix and match a few setups it is still going to be expensive but not near as high as fm. My act xt pressure plate and 4 puck unsprung disk ran about 300 bucks from there and is rated at 305 tq in my 1.6 size how much power are you realistically going to be making man? this isnt a sbc you dont need more torque than hp ;) .

I like what magna has to say...but I'm lazy enough to take now chances and just buy the FM #2 clutch. I have a spec s3 and it gets the job done at the cost of nausea, but I'm buying the fm clutch next because its so much easier on drivetrain.

I have the FM Extreme happy meal. Other than the price, it's an excellent package. I have the older PP so the pedal pressure is quite a bit heavier, but the flywheel weight and overall feel are excellent.

I'd get the FM. It is a bit hard to deal with the pedal, but overall it is a good product. Took them a bit to get the disk right had to send me 3 new ones they had a issue with the supplier but it is now fixed.

I have the FM happy meal. I don't have the extreme, the clutch pedal is no different than stock.

hustler 02-17-2010 09:52 AM

Do you guys complaining about pedal feel have the new FM clutches or the old ACT stuff?

musanovic 02-17-2010 10:15 AM

Not complaining i got the new one. some people could not drive it I had to stall couple times to get it right. I don't mind the hard pedal feel but a 125lbs kid may have a harder time pressing it.

I've got the FM Stage 1 and love it. Feels like stock. Holds like Grizzly Bear.

1.6 ACT XT with street disc is on the car currently. Pedal pressure is a bit more than stock, and my 120lb girlfriend who's never driven stick has no problem working the pedal. It's a little annoying with stop and go traffic, but I'd be more annoyed by a puck disc. I'll be upgrading to the 1.8 ACT XT SS too and will expect the same awesomeness. Bought from carolinaclutch.com

Mine is the older ACT IIRC. I'm not complaining, it's actually rather nice once you get used to it.

Has anyone tried this?
XTDŽ STAGE 3 CLUTCH w FLYWHEEL 89-93 MIATA 1.6L MX5 : eBay Motors (item 380206448504 end time Feb-22-10 19:53:14 PST)
I don't care how streetable it is (on off is fine), I just want to know if it will work.

Exact same here.

I don't know why everyone complains about this clutch...always been great to me, and well beyond liveable. I actually like the slightly stiffer pedal, and OEM engagement rocks when you're not alone.

Nothing worse than your passenger thinking you're just a tool with a fast car he doesn't know how to drive smoothly.

I had ordered the XTD above, and almost put it on the car, but patsmx5 talked me out of it. I still love him for that. eBay puck clutch went to someone that just needed cheap holding power and didn't care as much about engagement.

Dual disc cerametallic from Emilioz. I'm going to be rockin it, you will wish you had it, too, when I end up owning you.

I do wish I was rockin one of Emilio's setups, but it's an extra grand over the cheap xtd setup that I linked.

I really liked my older FM clutch. It held everything I threw at it in an FMII car that normally weighed 2700 pounds after driver/passenger w/o the hardtop
