Coming along...

Just thought I would share with everybody my accumulated parts thus far:

The manifold, downpipe, and turbo arrived today!

I have a concern about the turbo...it has a touch of side-to-side shaft play, which I hear is a bit normal for MHI turbos (this is a small 16g), but it also "whirs" a bit when spun. A high-pitched whir. And occasionally you can hear a tiny bit of a grinding sound when you spin the shaft. Maybe I'm just paranoid. I'm trying to decide if I should rebuild it or not.

But anyway...cool huh?

Total spent so far: $634, including shipping, for turbo, manifold, downpipe, injectors, fuel pump, AFPR.

I love the manifold. Damn thing needs its own codpiece.

adbradley 11-07-2006 05:26 PM

YESSSSSSSS!!!!

That is the exact manifold i was going to build, and now i cant wait to see how it works for you. Any concern about the turbo weight being so far away from the head mount flange? Are tou going to have another support mounted to the turbo? How much did tony charge for the mani and down pipe?

looks awesome man!

Atlanta93LE 11-07-2006 06:00 PM

Well, it's pretty sturdy. More like a brick. I'm hoping it won't need another turo-mounted support. As for how much Tony charged, I'm not sure. I bought it off a guy here that had it made for his wife's car, but she wouldn't let him boost it. His loss was my gain! Best part (for me) is that it was intended for a car with AC and PS (which mine does)!

adbradley 11-07-2006 06:17 PM

i like it!! im gonna build the same thing

fatty 11-07-2006 06:24 PM

that manifold looks fricken sweet

adbradley 11-07-2006 06:31 PM

i sware to god i have a solid model i was drawing of that exact same design! but i scrapped the idea thinking it was to much piping, but this has revived my intrest.. all it is are some weld el's for the 1.6 should be 2 1.5 inch 90s, 2 1.5 inch tee's, 4 1.5 inch 45's, and one 2 or 2.5 inch 90, this correct atlanta?

Atlanta93LE 11-07-2006 06:36 PM

That's right. Pretty thick stuff, too.

On another note: the PO had an "upgraded clutch" installed on the car 5k miles before I bought it. I finally tracked down what kind, and it is a Max-5 clutch rated to ~260ft-lb torque! Means I can up the boost sooner! Or, simply start with the stock wastegate setting (7psi I think? Maybe 9?) Weak link will definitely be the rear end I guess. Oh well, to be expected.

Was the 16g used? great job on getting stuff together that is way cheap. i would have the turbo checked out by someone knowledgable about such things in person before i went into a rebuild, even so they are just a trip to the mitsu dealer away. boost the hell out of that bitch with the 305's and peiburg you should have enough fuel for 250-300 hp so go ahead and max out the clutch you know you want to. :gay:

Ben 11-07-2006 06:48 PM

Cool.

When are we installing it? :yippee:

Atlanta93LE 11-07-2006 06:55 PM

I'm working on figuring out about an intercooler. I'll go with the 18x12x3 that Braineak is using, but piping will be interesting. I want to keep it cheap, and going with the standard aluminum pipe/silicone coupler approach certainly isn't cheap.

I'm sourcing oil fittings for the turbo, and everybody is giving me a different answer about what size they are. Looks like I'll be needing a J-pipe also. And my eyes are peeled for a used Bipes.

Magna, your post made me smile. I definitely WANT to max out the clutch, but that's not the safe thing to do...yet. I wonder where I can bring this turbo to get it checked out?

I'll let you know Ben :winkwink:

cjernigan 11-07-2006 07:06 PM

I had a hell of a time finding oil fittings. So i went to Lowes and used their hardware to test it all i ended up with 1/2" x20 oil inlet and my coolant was 1/4 NPT. Which I thought was weird, it was easy to figure it out though once i had all that infront of me. Just kept trying different fittings. Napa's usually have loose hardware as well. Otherwise everywhere i went had their hardware in packages. Ace might as well. Nice manifold for sure, im jealous.

Atlanta93LE 11-07-2006 10:03 PM

Well, seems like the turbo has no more shaft play than any other used oil-bearing turbo that has been shipped across the country. Still a bit concerned about the "whirring," but I guess I shouldn't judge the sound of spinning a dry turbo, eh?

adbradley 11-07-2006 10:19 PM

atlanta, can i get a side shot of that manafold?

No prob. Here you go!

Braineack 11-07-2006 10:34 PM

you should send me your 2 extra injectors so I have a full 2nd set.

adbradley 11-07-2006 10:38 PM

gracias

Atlanta93LE 11-07-2006 10:48 PM

I'm game for getting rid of injectors once I determine four that work.

jayc72 11-07-2006 11:15 PM

Get the injectors flow tested and clean if necessary. Cost me ~$20 to verify I had four balanced injectors.
