Default t25 or TD04. What's the difference?

What is the difference? I have never been able to get a solid answer on this. I have a turbo off of a Mitsubishi eclipse and have always thought of it as a T-25 however 1/2 of the people who see it, and more importantly look at the flanges, say "oh a TD04". So what is the deal here?

Reason I ask is I need to order a Gasket for the thing at the manifold. I tried the cool kids method and had both sides spot faced before I put it on and just went without a gasket. Now it has a slight leak at start up. Goes away after 5 min of running, but ******* embarrassing to brag about my hella fast turbo setup and then it sounds like a John Deere when I fire it up.

if you have a mitsu t25 it is a tdo5 exhaust housing. same as 14b 16g. i do believe the tdo4 was the 1g automatic 13g turbo. the td06 is on the bigger 20g turbo but it really doesnt matter they all use the same gasket. so go to the store tell them you need a gasket for a 1996 eclipes you should have 4 14mm bolts to loosen slide it inpace tighten and go fairly simple. good luck

Well one small problem. They didn't sell the eclipse in europe. So the dealer has no idea what I am on about. But a little searching has me thinking the flange to the manifold is standard T-25 and the flange to the DP is TD04. That right?

It's a garrett T25 with a mitsubishi TD04 flange on it. Don't get a T2 flange, won't work.

OK, to actually answer your question and skip all this bullshit:

DSMs (both 1G and 2G) used a different inlet flange to the turbine housing than the normal stuff out there. DSM refers to the cars made by the partnership between Crysler and Mitsu in the early 90s, though we can get really technical if you want regarding cars after 94. The Eclipse turbo is a DSM turbo. While the 2Gs used a turbo refered to as the T-25, it used this oddball turbine inlet pattern. The turbo you have probably has a circular inlet to the turbine housing right? Your run of the mill stuff out there, like a T3, has a rectangular one. The 2G DSM turbo is indeed a T25 CHRA and compressor, but it uses the DSM type turbine housing (TD04).

Not than any of this really even matters. Just get get a damned DSM gasket. Any DSMer will have like 4 of them around. In fact the next time I am home (which wont be for a week or so) I will look around. I would be shocked if I cant find one or two at least. If you will pay me shipping I will send the thing to you.

Or just get one from:

www.machv.com
www.dsmparts.com
www.ffwdconnection.com
www.jackstransmissions.com
www.boneheadperformance.com

and like 40 other places.

GVR4s were the really early Evos more or less.

Right then. As I understand all that, Garrett was making the turbo's for Mitsubishi and using a proprietary exhaust side housing for them. So it is a t-25, just with a td04 exhaust housing? So what the hell is a tdo4 then? Is that an older mistu made unit that garret stepped in to replace?

Doesn't matter, just curios.

I do know who/what DSM is. My understanding has always been that is means diamond star motors as Mitsu was doing all the actual engineering and the dodge stuff was just repackaged mistu platforms.

Again, doesn't matter.

I have never owned a mistu, always lusted after the AWD turbo 2nd gen eclipse's but by the time I could afford one they had all fallen apart.

I had not thought of the EVO. they do of course sell them here in England. That explains alot actually. When I had the turbo rebuilt here they had a spare exhaust housing for it (old one had a small crack), the guy at the rebuilder didn't know whet it was from only that it was the same. Well now I know.

No mine has a square port to the manifold, I am using the stainless ebay manifold that everyone says cracks unless braced. Mine is braced and lasting so far.

Thanks anyway, looks like an evo 1-3 t-25 gasket will work then.

Td0(#) is a designation that Mitsubishi gives to their turbine wheels. For whatever reason (probably monetary) mitsubishi decided to not use a 14/15/16 b/g/t on the second generation eclipse, and instead use a garrett t2 unit with a custom turbine housing (even though they use td05 units on evos of the same year...). IMO this was a stupid move, as the mitsu compressors are much more durable and more efficient as well (compared to old tech garretts, not so much the GT series).

Thanks anyway, looks like an evo 1-3 t-25 gasket will work then.
Yup, any 4g63-t equipped chassis should use a mitsu gasket.

Sorta. Its funny, but Cyrsler was making some pretty cool turbo FWD hatchs here back in the 80s that were in many ways the ancestors to the DSM cars. A good bit of the DNA in the DSMs is North American as much as Japanese. Then we in this country seemed to collectively stop wanting hot hatches or something, which is why you guys get so much awesome hardware (like 300HP Foci with LSDs) while we get ****** Cavaliers. You lucky bastards.

Actually I am from New Orleans, I have only been in England for the last 3 years. I know the pain that is watching from afar as the europeans get all the good **** and we have to make do with the half warm versions. Why I moved here and then bought a car I could get there is as much a mystery to me as it may be to you. Skylines and evo's are actually pretty affordable if you are willing to go back about ten years........maybe that will be next.

Oh and I was wrong, I do have a round opening in the inlet port. Square flange, but a round hole. I am going to call the local mitsu dealer tomorrow and see if they can get me what I need.

Bingo, standard DSM flange then. That link I posted is one option of about 5000. I imagine shipping would be a bitch though. I will look for one the next time I am home, I'll bet USPS could get that done for like 10 bucks.

While you are in there, I hope you port the housing and manifold. That horrible little ring they cast into it is nothing but a restriction. Its one of the first mods to do to those cars.

Ask for the gasket off an evo 3. Mitsu used the same Tdo style housing until the twin scrolls came out on the newer evo.

BTW Europe did get eclipse, they are just really really really rare. Germany has a rare verison of the 1gen eclipse with a targa top as a dealer option

Got it from the dealer yesterday. Damn thing was 20 pounds!! Thats like 32 USD!!! On the other hand it is very nice as far as gaskets go. triple layered metal. Anyway I'll pop it on tomorrow and hope it cures it.

Very kind of you to offer to send one sparetire, but the noise is driving me nuts, worth the money to get it done sooner.

Thanks to all for the lesson, Why isn't there a sticky that explains all this turbo ID jargon?

Did you think of making your own gasket? I use quality metal reinforced exhaust gasket material, a milling drill bit and tin snips. It is real easy to do.
