crank & rod bolts reusable?

Got all the parts for a complete 1.6 rebuild, new pistons and some ARP head studs and even a new crank pulley bolt but i totally forgot about the rod and crank bolts

I tried looking around for some answers but none.

So are the crank and rod bolts reusable?

hustler 07-07-2009 11:37 PM

1. Why are you building a motor with stock rods
2. don't re-use the rod bolts
3. re-use the mains

I replacedal hardware due to the wonderful world of cost/benefit. $100 for new main bolts could help me drive home from the track.

railz 07-08-2009 01:11 AM

1. im not boosting past 12, if anything im very satisfied with what i have now,10psi.

2.^^^

3. so main/crank bolts are reusable?

elesjuan 07-08-2009 02:11 AM

Honestly I wouldn't use those stock rods either, but yeah.. You can reuse the rod bolts and the main bolts. I wouldn't recommend reusing the crank snout bolt however.

Wouldn't kill ya to get some ARP rod bolts though.. ;)

thesnowboarder 07-08-2009 02:25 AM

jeez crist man, 300 bucks and it will be pretty damm strong. Screw the stock rods, wait another paycheck and get them. Even at 10-12 psi it something you should consider.

railz 07-08-2009 02:43 AM

yeah i know, stock rods are no no, but i drove like 4hrs to pick up a complete 1.6 rebuild kit a few months ago and the dude had the pistons press fitted and mounted so cant get new rods.

The next motor i have sitting in the garage will be fully built in a fewwwww months but i need a fresh for now, my current is really old and shady

Savington 07-08-2009 03:08 AM

There is no possible excuse for using stock rods in a motor build. None. I don't care if God himself installed them. You take them out, get Belfabs, and put them in. It's retarded not to.

you're gonna end up spending more money if you take this route...

If you can tell me that i can remove the PRESS FITTED mounting pins with out damaging the pistons then I promise I will go into credit card debit just so I can order the m-tuned rods tonight

Granted, I've never built a Miata engine, but from the ones I have done, I don't recall the wrist pin ever being an interference fit into the piston. At least give it a shot. Remove the clips and try tapping the wrist pin out of the piston with a dowel.

If the pin was press fit the build wasn't done properly. Often times the pin must be polished down to the correct clearances.

railz 07-08-2009 12:52 PM

sorry guys i cant risk "trying" to remove the pins if i dont got the facts that i can for sure.

sixshooter 07-08-2009 01:14 PM

If it was press fitted did they use circlips or not?

Edit: I am familiar with press fitting wrist pins on rods but never on pistons. Anybody?

Edit Edit: You have the motor apart and all of the machining done and don't want to use forged rods because you don't want to wait just a little longer?

Order rods, take them to machine shop, Give them 40$ and pickup in one day... ;)

im only assuming that the wrist pins are press fitted and then cir-clips go on each end?

If i can remove the wrist pins with out damaging the pistons i,ll order the m-tuned rods today. :giggle:

Savington 07-08-2009 07:29 PM

Pretty sure the wrist pins aren't press-fitted in OEM pistons, so either you're going to install fucked-up OEM stuff or you're going to buy Belfab rods and do it right.

railz 07-08-2009 07:43 PM

Lemme tear apart this other block i have and check to see if the wrist pins are removable

Its not like re-using syringes with lizards at the truck stop.

railz 07-08-2009 10:11 PM

ok, all done with the tear down. I checked the wrist pins and they come out like nothing after you remove the cir-clips...doh.

im ordering the M-tuned rods and some ARP main bolts right now.

You should whore yourself out to like 6 fat chicks at 50$ a pop; or 3 really really fat chicks at 100$ a pop; fat chicks need lovin' too right? All you have after is some bulletproof rods and the most disturbing experiences/images stuck in your brain forever. IMHO... worth it :giggle:

Anyone know of these ebay rods?
MAZDA1.6/1.8 B6/BP 323 MIATA /PROTEGE H BEAM ROD 5.230":eBay Motors (item 360165074841 end time Jul-23-09 17:07:22 PDT)

I was just looking around on ebay and came across these..there said to hold up to 650hp apparently. made of the same grade steel and some of the same specs other name brand rods have.

discuss, unless it already has been. yes i searched

you might as well just buy from m-tuned. when you add the $40 dollars for the arp bolts to the ebay rods they cost the same.

plus m-tuned is a forum sponser.....

railz 07-09-2009 06:40 AM

yeah, i do plan on buying from m-tuned. just wondering if those rods offerd were any good

we can now let this thread die in peace =)

sixshooter 07-09-2009 08:35 AM

Everybody with 650hp Miatas is running Ebay rods. You'd be a fool not to go with them.
