Det can wizzards

Is the hose size indicative of the resolution of the det can or does it even matter. Basically those who have done this have you played with using stuff smaller than 3/8's lines etc. It is just that i dont fancy any more holes in my firewall like a 3/8's line would require and if a smaller say 1/4 inch line will do the job like i have on my stethiscope now then this will be a simple and effective mod for me.

I say you go buy some hose, try it and report back. Then you'll be the det can wizard. :firedevil

Is a det can when you listen to your engine with basically a stethescope so that you can hear knock/ping/detonation/etc? This is I am assumming a cheap or ghetto way of doing this? Sounds like a great Idea and would be fun to try out but i know nothing about it.

magnamx-5 07-20-2007 08:46 AM

Yes it is i might just have to school myself on this My wizarding skills grow faster than harry fucking potter on this forum I go from WI wizzard-turbo wizzard-motor pullin wizzard-MS software wizard-detcan wizzard  It has definatley been fun though.

IMO the det can is superior to knock sensor when it comes to detecting knock... if the listener knows what knock sounds like. :D

great i am out of luck then everyone knows i dont have knock damn ;)

(speaking of detonation detection in paul's thread) did anybody ever try this? Richard? Where are you?:hsugh:

here's a good example:

I have an electronic det can.

Uses a small speaker/amp from radioshack and a wired up Bosch Knock sensor. Set of headphones and its amazing the things you can hear. ie: fuel rail priming and every other noise the car makes.

I'd think that one of these would be the best way to build your base IGN map in boost given electronic knock detections susceptibility to mistaking noise as knock. And it would at least be a second opinion if knock did show in a log.

Think there's any disadvantage to your setup vs. the tube?

holy bananas , i laughed so hard when i saw the pic of him wearing it
ive never actually heard knock, im afraid to turn boost up :(
so i wouldn't know what to listen for

magnamx-5 03-18-2008 12:54 PM

I am in KY i might try that thanks M2cup

Shoot, I've been meaning to ask you exactly what you use... pretty much anything that powers a mic and you can listen with headphones, correct?

I've ran very similar setup on a friend's civic like the det can in the photos above. 3/8" tubing to a closed headphone, no amplification. It works but if you have it bolted too close to the turbo you just hear the turbo make noise over the engine at high revs :p .

I'm still trying to find a good spot to bolt it on my miata. I'll probably stick a microphone in the det can tube so I can hear it from my laptop (It's a little quiet without amplification.).

BTW, bad knock sounds like gravel/small pebbles kicking up and hitting your wheel well except it's coming from the engine bay area.

I would assume so. The radioshack one is just so easy to use.

This is what I use.

with some stereo cable, an obd1 injector clip (or clip that comes with the knock sensor) and a bosch knock sensor. I bolt it to the block, plug my headphones into the amp unit and good to go.

m2cupcar 03-18-2008 02:13 PM

looks like the start of a Det Can How To sticky ;)

Man that is a brilliant approach IMO, better than running a stethoscope hose in from the engine bay, especially if the knock sensor is already in place like mine is ('99). I was about to wire up the knocksense to the MS but think I'll give this a try. If the input impedance into the amplifier is very high, then it could probably be used in parallel with the knocksense to adjust the knocksense sensitivity level.

I'm happy like a little girl
