differential question

if the axels turn in opposite directions when it is off the car is the diff open or a torsen...
or does that not mean anything
thanks

put the car in gear to put a small amount of stress than turn the wheels. If they turn together then its an LSD, if not then its an open.

oops sorry didnt read properly u said the diff is already off the car my bad

Viscous takes a couple turns before both wheels spin right?

turbopezz 03-23-2007 09:19 PM

mine viscous thats on my car ,turns the wheels at the same time.no couple of tourns to spin.

I have a torsen and they act differently than a clutch pack (viscous)LSD. With the rear wheels off the ground a clutch pack will make the wheels turn the same way. An open diff and a torsen will cause the wheels to turn in opposite directions when off the ground. It may be possible for you to tell that you have a torsen by looking in the diff fill plug for the weird gears that make a torsen do its job. It isn't easy to do but I did it when I first purchased my car. Requires a mirror. The best way to find out if it is open or torsen is to power out of some slow speed turns and see if just the inside tire turns loose by itself (open) or do you transisiton to "tail-happy land" with both (torsen) breaking loose at the same time. Good luck.

I did that and they broke the news to me that it came stock with an open.

If you autocross, the torsen is for you. It is fabulous! You can bring on the power much earlier in a corner. If it is a "go to work" car or gentle touring car, don't worry about it.
