DIY 5-7 psi turbo recommendations...

buying a full on greddy kit or begi kit is just too expensive for me at this time. I am looking to piece together the turbo kit myself. Is there anyone that could help start me off of the hardware that i need? i guess we can start with the turbo, nothing to big but has upgrade potential. looking to keep at low levels of boost and will upgrade injectors and ecu when i decide to up the boost. i have a 91 1.6

If the greddy kit is over your limit then you will not be putting together a kit that is at all complete.

Lazzer got his build down to ~$250 ... but it was about as ghetto as humanly possible, if not more.

$250?

Did he take lessons from the kid with the SRT4?

:bowrofl: i knew i would single handedly make him famous...ok so i had a littel help, but i did alot of grunt work all over the interwebz.

I don't remember what all he did, but you can look up some of his old posts and see the level of ingenutity he puts into his shit...like his electronic BOV.

MattEGTR 09-10-2008 12:57 AM

Electronic BOV? Like, the noisemaker that you wire to the TPS or whatever to make people think you have a turbo?

No, like a real BOV that was electric for better response time...Don't try to understand, we all did at the time, no one succeeded.

I... uh... wow. Did it work?

:dunno: he stopped posting for some reason, not sure if it was voluntary or if it was a banishment.

I just did a search, that MX3 he had was remarkably clean for being a $230 build.

And that FM/FFS cockfight thread was priceless.

Found it in a link in one of the search results.

i did mine for just under $1000, of course not including megasquirt. search for my build thread. of course, i did get lucky with the manifold which is a used custom built ETD shorty. You could modify the cast ebay manifold to accept the subaru flange. subaru TD04 turbos can be had really cheap for what they are, a VERY quick-spooling turbo that wont fall off boost at the top either.
