DIY FC Rx7 oil cooler(HOW DO U HOOK IT UP)
 

So I searched this site for DIY's on this, and over all around the internet, maybe my search skills suck, but I have yet to find a DIY picture by picture guide to how in the hell to hook one these things up. I just picked up http://a8.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphot...8_428739_n.jpg
not bad for $20. I found this on ebay. Im assuming get that and all I will need is lines and a mounting location. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/New-T...5fAccessories] SO if I grab that up where can I get the stainless steel hose I would need. I may come off as a bit of a noob and I do see the hose size but cant seem to locate hosing that fits that. And or if anyone has an easier setup than that, Im cheap as crap so I dont wanna spend a lot haha.

IDK doing a DIY customer oil cooler setup sounds a bit more complicated than taking off wheels, what Im saying is, people just say install it, no guide on how to? and I know Im a noob, Ive never done it, just looking for some help, sorry should I look somewhere else?

No, But You probably dont know this I was alot nicer than some on this forum might have been. Its not a place to ask super basic or stupid (Wanna put ar sr20 in, what turbo should i dream about) questions.

You need to have some lines made up by a hydraulics place or make them yourself.

If you take it to your local speed shop and say hey I need some fittings for this and my oil sandwich plate they will give you the right ones and the hose for it.

As Dann said, you need a sandwich plate that goes between your engine block and the oil filter. The sandwich plate will have 2 ports for running the 2 lines to the cooler. You will then have to source the feed and return lines that go from the sandwich plate to the cooler and back.

Also, since you're new you should go to the main page of the forum and follow the recommended steps for all noobs. This includes putting your location in your profile and a brief description of your car in your signature. This will help tremendously with any future questions you may have because we'll already understand what car you're driving and can help with any solutions that may be unique to your setup.

I figured thats as much as needed to be done, just need to figure out the lines I guess. and Im not a total noob, joined a long time ago, just more of a lurker and reader than poster, but I suppose Im set up my account correctly. Thanks for the advice

Also someone with your knowledge level, probably wouldnt know if an oil cooler is actually a good idea.

In that case an oil cooler with no thermostat is a very bad idea.

its SkiDude's old 94 turbo miata, its pretty modified, like I said more of a lurker here than poster, I have done plenty to the car, just never done an oil cooler, and was just trying to get an idea of what exactly I needed and what Im getting myself into, doesnt seem to hard now, just working on the lines I guess seems like the hardest part

they do lines and AN fittings. and i bet you either them or scotty can get you the sandwich plate

Yes I have oil temp guage, and the oil cooler has a built in thermostat so Im not really that worried, I do plan on doing track days this summer so

General, there aren't any specific write ups, although there is some information on what fittings you need, and a few pictures of mounting location ideas. Basically you replace the front bumper crash beam with an oil cooler. The threads on the oil cooler are BSP (I THINK!), and most just use an adapter to convert to -AN. -10 or -8 lines are routed from the oil cooler to the sandwich plate, where they're screwed on to -AN-NPT adapters. To give you a HUGE hint, Savington runs one, along with Thesnowboarder. His old for sale (Thesnowboarder's) has a great picture of his setup for you.

AFAIK, that cooler has a 140* built in thermostat. So you should be fine just getting a cheapo adapter plate without a thermostat in it.

any chance you could point one out, all I can find is ones with built in adapters, or not what I would consider cheap haha

Careful with them cheap sandwich plates though - I've heard some of the ebay ones need some deburring. Nothing wrong with getting one made by a good company that has a thermostat in it - having two in the system won't hurt, plus I would personally prefer the cooler not be flowing until 180*. 140 is pretty low. I have the 180* thermostat and on the street the oil hangs out around 160*...

I'm not one for bashing personally, but I understand the cause when someone demonstrates blatant noobishness.
