DIY Thread #2...

This shit is horrible. I had my mind made up on what I wanted to do (AFM/Bipes/O2 clamp/AFPR) but I started adding up the cost and seeing people have issues with this setup and started thinking it might be easier to just venture into the land of megasquirt...

Here is the plan:
1990 1.6. Stock motor: 190-200 rwhp w/ a GT2554R at about 12 lbs.

Have:
Garrett/MSP GT2554r
ACT XT PP and ST Disc - all that jazz for changing it
24x4x3 IC
Wheels/Tires Rota Circuit 8s w/ Azenis 615s(at least better than stockers!)
2.5" exhaust and test pipe
Begi Manifold and Downpipe
Torsen Swap
Laptop
Megasquirt
Ebay Bov
Jun Flywheel
Oil Feed
AEM Wideband O2

Comming Soon:
550cc S5 Turbo Injectors
Instrument Hood
Paint!!!!!

Need:
Oil/Water lines
IC Piping
Gauges
A Miracle

Want:
Tires
Automatic TPS
Finish Panel :(

This shit gets expensive quick.

Hey guys...first update, whats a fair price on 550cc injectors? $100 for a used working set sound fair?

Al Hounos 01-07-2007 08:09 PM

You don't need a new fuel pump. I wouldn't pay 100 for uncleaned 550s, but i would if they had been cleaned recently.

miatamania 01-07-2007 09:58 PM

How much would be fair price...and will the factory pump support that? I thought I read that it needed to be upgraded...so lost. :(

neogenesis2004 01-07-2007 10:08 PM

only needs to be upgraded if you are controlling fuel through "analog" means. $100 was the average I saw on uncleaned 550s when I was shopping for mine. I found mine for $85 though after a little looking and got injector clips on ebay for $15 shipped. I think cleaned 550s would run a little more than $120-130 normally.

miatamania 01-07-2007 10:12 PM

oh wow...thats for that info about the pump...thats a 100 bucks I don't need to spend.

So 100 bucks shipped isn't unfair, but if I searched a while I MAY get a cheaper price?

miatamania 01-15-2007 02:03 AM

Well...due to the circumstances...it seems that a Torsen rear end will be thrown in the mix...

So...a clutch that can hold 277 ft-lbs...and a Torsen LSD...this ought to make things a little interesting.

please explain more... i'm basically in miatamania's shoes right now
and i'm going with megasquirt too... i have been looking at the walboro
or jackson racing fuel pumps...
I'm planning on boosting between 8psi - 14psi on 91 octane with 1.8
injectors on my 1.6...

You only need a fuel pump if you will be adding fuel by increasing the fuel pressure. Since you are going with a MS you will be running larger injectors and/or increasing the duty cycle of the injectors and therefor do not need to increase fuel pressure to get additional fuel. The stock pump can flow enough fuel for most applications (probably want to replace it over 300 whp, but I don't have personal experience here yet and could be wrong).

^ very nicely written, I went and spent like 3-4 hours reading post in the mega squirt section after you guy told me about that...it makes a lot more sense now.:eek5:

RicanmiataRacer 01-15-2007 05:25 PM

why 550's ......thats too large of an injecter, why not go with light green top mkII injecters....they plug right in, Get a emanage dude...simple and effective

If you want extra control over fuel pressure get a vortech along with the emb..use a 6:1 or 8:1 disc.

Emanage, boomslang harness, and call it solved

RicanmiataRacer 01-15-2007 05:29 PM

by the way how much have you spent total?

its the cheapest solution, using MS w/ 550s gives you plenty of room and the 550s are cheap as far as injectors go....no FMU or anything to worry about.

RicanmiataRacer 01-15-2007 05:53 PM

The more corners you cut, the more issues that will follow, good luck with the ms, it's great for the price and involves alot of patience and time...its no weekend project. Oh and the price will add up believe it, wiring, various sensors and parts to make the ms work will be needed but will be worth it in the long run...I plan one day to go ms...but for now Im sticking with the em

hmmm

Already Have:
-$350 for the clutch
-$180 something in seals, boots, bushings, oil, plugs/wires...
-$600 for the Konis, FM springs, FCM package
-$200? for the Rotas w/ the falken 615s
-$50 bucks for the t25
-$0 for the I/C I bought a turbo, Ic, random bov and B18 piping and sold the turbo for what I paid for everything....so now I have random piping and a bov in my room at school.
-($600-700 for the torsen since I just blew my shit up - should order that sometime this week...)
-$120 for the custom exhaust and the 2.5" test pipe

= $2200

Need:
-MS -$550? <--if I buy it pre-assembled
-550cc Injectors - $103 shipped
-BEGI Mani/DP - $725-825
-Oil lines - ???
-Rebuild kit for turbo - $70
-IC Piping - $100 bucks?
-Bov/bypass valve - $100-200

All said and done its looking at about 4k...but thats for suspension, rear end, wheels/tires included.

That'll be ~7k invested in the entire car.

RicanmiataRacer 01-15-2007 05:56 PM

Oh and why do ya have a dsm compressor housing?

RicanmiataRacer 01-15-2007 06:00 PM

Wow man you've spent a hell of alot more than me...
And I have almost everthing I need ...thats the word "almost"

the way I was going to run the IC piping it moves it out of the way a bit, not sure if I'm going to run it like that though.

I'll buy the Plug and play setup from Kingof1337 if he's still doing it ;) Its not really that much more expensive and controls everything...with the ability to mod it :)

I'm WAY to lazy/incompetent to build my own. And if you take out the tires, suspension, and rear end, I really haven't spent much on the actual turbo stuff.

RicanmiataRacer 01-15-2007 06:05 PM

Wait wait wait....sombody makes pre-assmembled harnesses for the ms?
But you will have the alter the pre-made board for the miata.
