Do I need a flex section on this wastegate branch?

Hey there, I just fabed up my wastegate branch on my downtube. Do I need a flex section? It's pretty easy to stick it in there.

PS: pay no attention to my crap ass TIG welding ;)

wouldn't hurt considering the little tube will expand at different rates.

shoulda just run a open dump... ha

looks very nice tho, good job. Only thing Id change is make the dump tube go into the exhaust at a less angle.

Yes, flex is urgent. Adequate flex can be had from a swage of one tube up over the other. If you use a swage, consider that the larger open end of the swage ought to point away from the wastegate.

I looked for an SS swage at 1.5", couldn't find them anywhere (summit etc.), is there an advantage with a swage vs flex section? I think I can fit an SS flex section in there.

I want welding Skillz!

My mission tomorrow is to work the word "swage" into at least 5 conversations.

Lol, I unbolted the downpipe and it sprung a bit; I guess I don't have a choice here, I'm putting in a flex section.

DontPassTheFence 07-03-2008 03:22 PM

yea, all else aside those welds look pretty good, I wouldnt worry about it.

Nice :D

you should try to make the merge a little more gradual, but otherwise it looks fine. i've never used a flex on wg re-circ setups and haven't had one come back for a repair yet.

Flex fo'sho!!!

Is that a WB bung directly across from where the dump feeds into to the DP?
If so I'd revise that as well.

Is that a bad thing??? That's the stock one, I haven't welded in the wideband one yet...

Weir is becoming my hero. Except those socketheadcapscrews...have any issues with the allen area stripping out after the bolts have been in use for a few years? I'd like to find 12 point bolts & nuts in metric.

In response to the OP, a flex section can't hurt. If the DP sprung and you can't get it back, then you don't have much of a choice. If you can get it back together, normally after a few heat cycles it won't spring anymore.
