Don't V-band flanges like this kind of defeat the purpose of vband flanges?

These things:

I mean, they're just bolted on, so it seems like they'd just expand and contract and come loose like the the problem you'd be trying to avoid by using Vbands.

Is it really that stupid or am I that stoopid?

Well, it still makes removing the DP easier.

This.

One thing that does present an issue with a v-band at that location is the distance between the flange and the firewall has been cut 2 or 3 inches shorter. Without a very tight radius bend, its hard to get the downpipe to turn under the firewall and still have enough clearance for the engine to rock around in there and not hit stuff. I actually removed my V-band from my turbine exit for this very reason.

yes. The internal gate is pure ******ry too.

I use that, and it does fit. The bend off the turbo is tight, but good enough. I wanted to go with an external gate bad, I just don't have the cash.

internal gate of T3 must be bolted on...I've never once re-tightened my (5) 10mm wastgate bolts and/or (3) 8mm DP bolts.

An external wastegate v-band T3 turbine housing would look like this:
