downpipe bends

so... im looking for a template of some sort or perhaps a list of bends used to make a downpipe for a miata... anyone has anything? i bet it will make a great sticky thread if someone actually has something :)

well the begi-s looks like a 90* coming out of turbine followed by a 45*. Then to clear the transmission flange while not hitting the firewall, it looks like theres an s-bend made of two 45*s and then straight back including the flex bellow to the cat.

Only thing i think i want around for the build is a miter saw with a cuttoff wheel so i can get straight cuts when i finetune the fittment. Something to expand the pipes a bit would be super sweet too. Then tack it up and have a shop weld it up.

i cant weld for shit so ill just duct tape it and will have shop weld it for me :)

so... what bends should i get? 1x 90* and 3x 45* + 10' of straight? i think im gonna grab a U pipe as well while im at it in case i need some weird angle or something... this will be fun and will involve a LOT of duct tape...

I was planning on doing something like this. I have the top part of an old FM pipe that gives me a short 90degree bend from the turbo, to clear the firewall. Ill be using these connectors http://store.summitracing.com/partde...5&autoview=sku To adjust the size from 2.25 > 2.5 > 3". Right now im still not sure if im gonna go with either a cutout or a complete exhaust. http://store.summitracing.com/partde...5&autoview=sku Was thinking this thing which will do the 2.5">3.0">2.5 to stock cat. Also thinking of an electrical cutout for a fraction of the cost of a true 3".

What sizes are you dealing with? Will it get progressivley larger? It its all the same size you could probably just use one 180º bend and a section of straight.

Masking tape works well. It cuts clean with a razor for tacking and it doesn't leave the nasty residue behind.

I bought a tight radius 90 bend, regular 80 bend, and 6 feet of straight for mine. The 90 coming off the turbine, the 80 off that going back to the straight.

pics?

when i make mine ill document it for you guys. Or ill get lazy and pay the $300 for the begi-s downpipe with modification for a standard 5 bolt t3 flange.

eh... wont need this anymore... a client of mine will be building my miata engine and finishing my turbo :)

going 3" all the way with catalytic and resonator :)

Looking forward to seeing this. I have future plans for this as well.

How much work have you actually done yourself on your car(s)??

elesjuan 10-10-2008 04:43 AM

I'm betting on 1 90 degree, along with 2 45 degree bends..

but just in case, I bought an assortment of 10 misc bends in 3" mandrel aluminized. :D Once I get a good one fabbed up I might make it out of stainless, if I can get access to a TIG welder and figure out how to use one again... Don't think its quite like riding a bicycle...
