Downpipe touching coolant line

I have a custom 2.5'' downpipe for my GReddy that I bought from SKMetalworks. I noticed it touched the coolant line coming out of the firewall so I wrapped the downpipe in 2 layers of heat wrap and put some DEI hi temp silicone/fibreglass sleeving.

Should I be OK or figure out a way to re-route it? I've looked at it and there isnt a way to do it from what I can see. After a hard run the downpipe is touchable with my hand so with the wrap... should I be alright?

Bend it! In some of the FMII kits they tell you to bend the metal coolant runnin to the FW. At least mean said to anyways.

You could always do a coolant reroute and fix the problem as well.

How can I bend it though? It's the soft line that's touching not the hard line. I will do a coolant route soon... but some of the kits out there don't move the line I'm touching?

use a zip tie and pull it back towards the other line.

falcon 05-14-2010 05:19 PM

Zip tie would melt, no?

I have some safety wire, I guess I could try that.

Braineack 05-14-2010 05:20 PM

that works too. ive used zipties for years there.

just the one there helps pull the return line further from the DP.

Zipties are tough. Try it. I had lines to close to the DP and ZT worked fine.

If you use SW put a piece of hose around it. Like coolant hose. It wont melt and the SW wont cut throught the line as quickly..

Lol... that may work, but my downpipe is WAY closer than that. Keep in mind this is a GReddy ETD mani which sets the turbo back much further. And the d/p is 2.5'' with a 1'' separated wastegate runner.

I'll snap a pic when I get home from work and you'll understand.

I can vouch, its a fucking TIGHT fit.

falcon, might I suggest liberal amounts of reflective wrap/aluminum foil on EVERYTHING near that?

shlammed 05-14-2010 05:57 PM

bend the hard part of the tube.

wayne_curr 05-14-2010 06:02 PM

I didn't realize the ETD mani sets the turbo even farther back. It already left little room for a downpipe. Bend that hardline as much as you can and wrap the hell out of that stuff in reflective stuff. I have a bunch of it if you need some.

Is the different manifold design going to play hell with downpipe and exhaust fitment?

That's what I did. I'll post a pic.

Mr. I have a full PM box (SKMetalworks)... if you read this thread.... how the hell did you install the turbine+downpipe? I had to do it as one piece but then I couldn't really get good torque on the rear turbine bolts.

Mr. Pot calling the kettle black, your PM box is full 98% of the time! :fawk:

lol... yup but I'm not a subscriber. He is... that's a hell of a lot of PM's

Good point! Didn't realize he was a subscriber.

For the record I dont think he spends much time on here anymore but I have his phone number if you need it.

Mapp gas and 5 minutes and you can bend that hard line where ever you want it. Mine bends around the dipstick.
