Ebay catbacks?

Anyone have any experience with these?

Specifically this one : 1989-1998 Mazda Miata MX-5 m2 Performance Stainless Steel Catback Exhaust System | eBay

Did a search, but most ebay links are expired. Looking to upgrade from my stock exhaust.

I've heard go 3 inches or go home, but with lower power goals 2.5 inches is acceptable?

gfeeley 11-26-2012 07:37 PM

i had it on my NA 1991, sounded like shit and didnt fit. modification was required.

i do have a exhaust that i am sure fits thou, its for sale =D, its not the egay one

Looks like the Topspeed Pro 1 exhaust I had. If you have a 92 or newer you have to shave off the metal bracket for the rear lower control arm brace. It flows really well because honestly, it's practically a straight pipe. Loud as hell.

Oh boy. Loud even on a turbo car? Are there any better options on the cheap?

Oh yee of little search.

It sounds like ass. Yes, even with a turbo. Unless you love the sound of straight pipes with maybe like 5% resonation

Honestly for how it flowed, probably not. It should be noted that I didn't have a catalytic converter. There are lots of vids online, here is mine:

So what youre saying is that I should run dual flowmasters and smoke stacks because roll tide 'merica?

I hear ya. Not really looking to sound like ass or fartcan rice, as this is a daily driver

What do you suggest?

I see. Didn't know it was the same as a topspeed, I searched exclusively for m2 catbacks. Thanks for the audio clip!

Trust me I was tempted numerous times over by these shitty half priced exhausts. Kept thinking: Maybe its not that bad, maybe I can weld a resonator to it, maybe.........Then my MT gay lovers knocked sense into me. As they always do.

3" all the way, biggest straight through can you can stuff in there (which is like 5x11x28 or something) and maybe a resonator.

Its basically the only option for us BECAUSE NOT RACECAR folks.

I understand. That's the kind of advice I come here for, cause y'all haven't steered me wrong yet. About how much am I looking at for a shop to get this done? DIY? Artech?

18psi 11-26-2012 10:42 PM

last i heard abe was doing them for like 600-700 or something, which is completely reasonable considering the quality of his work. you'll have to check with him.

exhaust shops are hit and miss: if they do mandrel, and not completely dick up the welds and charge you under 500, I think that's worth doing too. there's actually a few guys that had that done recently (flounder being the most recent iirc)

OF course there's begi and fm too, but f me if I'm paying that kinda money. I think its like 1000 or something stupid

miloiii123 11-26-2012 11:19 PM

ive got the rs*r or sr*s can't remember which one is the legit and which one is the ebay one, but i love the sound of it, not fart can at all, very low and it looks good and fits good.

its also stainless so it still looks good too

Mellow, my Artech 3" stainless catback setup is 500 + 100 for the 5x11x22 muffler option and + 70 for a test pipe section. Cat is 160. Hope this helps!

FM wants $1019 for theirs, unless you're buying their turbo kit in which case it drops to $819 which IMHO is decently reasonable for full 3" w/ cat included.

I went over the $'s dozens of times trying to figure out the best/cheapest exhaust I could get away with for my upcoming install. In the end, make sure you're comparing apples to apples by checking:
pipe sizes (obviously 3" is the best),
does it include a resonator?
does it include the muffler?
does it include a catalytic converter (if you care about such things)?
misc crap: metal used, mandrel bent, overall fitment

After comparing all the possible combinations, many times the "cheap" solution would wind up being only $100-200 less than something built by a reputable supplyer (Abe, FM, Begi, etc).

In the end since I'm getting their kit anyways, I decided to go into debt a little more and get the FM full 3".

Just my $0.02

If it makes sense to you then go for it. Its definitely good stuff, and I agree: the major savings had from a DIY or custom made one is from lack of a cat, resonators, stainless piping, etc. I know that I've gotten away with making one for like $350 before, but that was using a lot of parts I already had (resonators, some piping, some hangers)..

I have had a 3" Enthuza exhaust on my car since 2008 and I am still extremely happy with it.

24" magnaflow or gtfo.

Long ago i ran a obx duals catback on my NA. Sounded good but problem is it was only 2.25" piping.
