My brother and I are looking at intercooler upgrades. Our current setup is custom turbo system, which includes a Greddy TD04 15G turbocharger along with a modified RX-7 TII intercooler. We are pushing 10 psi of boost. I already have in my possession an intercooler rated to flow 400hp; a spearco bar and plate core, measuring 3" x 8" x 26.5" (end-tank to end-tank) with 2.5" inlets. I was wondering what your opinion of this intercooler was in our application, in particularly whether it is too large. this is for a '95 miata. Thanks for any advice!

I think it would look f-ing great in there. Although, people don't usually run a 3" core. I haven't seen any. Not that I've been looking.

Is the turbo still efficient at 10 pounds?

losing AC. not sure about turbo efficiency at 10. aside from making it fit is the core a good fit in the project or would a smaller one actually perform better?

Sickmint and I both own the car. Yeah the car is running a hydra.

Sickmint is concerned about the core being too large for performance reasons...i'm more concerned with actually fitting it on the car...and with restricting airflow to the radiator (koyo 55mm is on its way).

I have one on my car, but haven't had it long enough to tell you if it's good or bad.

By the way, that is a damn long intercooler, but it should fit fine. My intercooler is 3-inch thick too, so depth is not an issue. I don't have a 55mm Koyo, so I can't say how that is going to crowd things. If you have an aftermarket swaybar, you may have problems fitting the Koyo. Just fyi.

Weight is an issue. Especially when its weight that is so far out on the nose. I say if you get decent intake temps with a smaller intercooler keep the smaller intercooler. To miatas weight literally worth its amount in gold - I wouldn't run anything larger than I aboslutely needed for an IC.

I can't imagine that IC weighing much more than the RX7 unit even though it is signifigantly larger. Sparco is usually really good about reducing weight and keeping the quality good (although you usually pay through the nose for this).

Personally I think that IC may be a bit big for the TD04. You will probably see a pretty signifigant pressure drop over that mammoth. Of course, I have no practical turbo experience yet... so take my opinions with a grain of salt (or a shot of tequila).

that bar and plate will probably be significantly heavier than the rx7 tube and fin side mount

I traded my precision i/c (bar and plate) for an srt4 i/c (tube/fin), mostly b/c the srt4 i/c was about 7lbs and the precision i/c weighed about 20lbs lol. Bigger not always better. imo spearco is alittle large for your app.
