EFR Internal wastegate questions

Hi, just got my new set up running which is an EFR6258, artech mani and downpipe, and all the other stuff everyone runs. Car is a 1990 1.6 car, the issue im having is when i adjusted the "Medium" wastegate actuator per Borgwarners instructions the car started boosting funny. By this i mean it would hit 10psi immediately then hang until about 4500 rpm before jumping to around 24psi. To me this means the actuator arm is to tight, needless to say loosened it, but the pattern is staying the same, with less peak boost. I plan on running upwards of 20 psi, i just dont want it to feel like vtec is kicking in after 4500 rpm..... So this leaves me with the question, should i bite the bullet and purchase the "High" wastegate actuator from Borg to get rid of the massive boost creep or should I keep the actuator around 10psi and use the EBC to tune for the rest? Or i could tighten the actuator back up and use the EBC to try and get it to boost more linear..... What say you fine folk?
Thanks,
Mike

can you post the boost log?

MustangMike 07-18-2014 02:40 PM

Yes, i can take one tonight when i get off work. Right now its creeps to about 18ish on heavy acceleration.

I'm having a hard time stomaching the idea that an EFR is creeping. The ones I've driven hold 11psi to redline without any issues.

Before i tightend the wastegate actuator arm it did hold 10-11 psi to redline. Since then it has started to creep. Ill post a log when get a chance to drive the car tomorrow.

Mine no creep.....even when I want it too!

10psi + EBC to 20 will spool better than a 20psi wastegate only. However I would definitely figure out what your current problem is first because tuning closed-loop EBC seems complicated enough when everything is working perfectly. Also I love the idea of being able to select high or low boost with the flick of a switch so that may color my thinking.

Tightening the WG actuator arm for more boost is the wrong way to add boost.

I ran up to 23-24 psi on "normal" wastegate without any problems. Tightened normally it gives about 12 psi.

Thanks for all the responses, i now have it set to 11-12 and it seems to be holding fine. Im going to try and get my ebc solenoid working to up the boost and if i still have creep issues, which i doubt, ill post some logs.
Thanks,
Mike

Mine was doing that. The end of the actuator rod was hitting the v-band clamp, I had to rotate the clamp.

The other thing to watch out for on the efrs is that since the iwg port is so fucking massive that on the weaker iwga cans the flapper can get blown open by exhaust pressure at high boost.

Der_Idiot 07-22-2014 10:33 AM

He never posted a spool log. I wanted to see how it performed :(

MustangMike 07-22-2014 10:53 AM

Ill check my v-band clamp for clearance! Thanks for the advice! I have a couple of logs i can post up later today if you guys want to see, the tune on them isn't that great but you'll get an idea.
