EGT mounting and other opinions needed
 

So at the moment the the FM mani and turbine hot side housing is down at the machine shop getting milled flat and re-drilled/tapped for trackspeeds inconel studs on a CNC machine. I am tired of taking the turbo out again and again, not getting to actually learn to tune or just enjoy the fun of boost. I'm looking at picking up the Maxigauge's mentioned in the "no stinking gauges thread" and I plan to pick it up later this summer. Since it has EGT I'd like to use that feature some day. Can I just have the machine shop tap the FM mani for EGT now and put a plug in it until I get a gauge sensor? If so what is the thread for EGT sensors? And can a pipe plug go in the hole and not launch out later? Also would like to learn from some of your nightmares. Should I tap the top where the FM logo is cast in or is it better to drill in from the bottom ( it is my understanding the EGT goes pre-turbo)? More concerned with the gauges wiring getting in the way or set on fire or getting in the way of my pretty FM heatshield. ----------- also car has power steering but no A/C.

At this point in time the FM mani is getting machine flat on both sides, turbo hotside where is mounts to the mani is as well. CNC drill/tap for 10mm inco studs. Begi ported the hotside too lastweek. Any other things to do before I get this back together. I'm running out of things to fix and really don't want to take this turbo off again til the motor come out.

Pre turbo. I put mine in the turbo hot side housing. Manifold at the collector area will work too, I had my mani coated, and was afraid of chipping or something if I drilled into it. either one should work fine and in your case both will have plenty of thickness to work fine. And yes top/bottom doesn't make a difference. Most do manifold....I'd just go with that. 1/8" NPT, and yeah you can pick up a plug from home depot/ace hardware for it.

What exactly do you want to measure turbine inlet temps? exhaust temp right out of the head?

Make sure you don't buy a covered thermocouple. Have to be exposed wires to be responsive and fast to update you of problems.
Do it while the manifold is out of the car.
I still have 3 more thermocouples to buy.

Maybe it shows my ignorance but do not know the difference^ Covered thermocoupler is it literally just that and regular style is bare wires hanging out?

I'd like to drill the mani because if I change turbos I won't have to re-drill again. Do it right at the collector. Anyone else have more pics of theirs? I'm almost at the point of drilling through the FM logo on the mani and plugging it. It seems from some googling at the collector should be a good place. Better ideas? With reasons why? Learn me.

if you're gonna only do one, then id just do it at collector,,, average out the cylinder differences. or pick the known hottest running cylinder and put one in that runner (but id still say just do collector)

Thanks for the link^. I didn't realize I could make a egt sensor for about $30. Any idea if the one posted here> http://www.omega.com/pptst/JTIN.html will output a "normal" gauge like the "maxi gauge" or autometer? I didn't see any signal output info. IE: X number of degrees is Y voltage. Also you think the couplers at>

About to pull the trigger on geting the sensor/coupler from the links listed. Are EGT sensors pretty standardized? Like this sensor will wire to any gauge?
