Electronic BOV

So the idea of electronic BOVs came up in conversation the other day.

The intent was for autocross type situations where the throttle is closed and reopened quickly.

With a typical BOV, the spike in vacuum will open the BOV. Pressure in the charge pipes is released needing to be recharged before boost pressure will be seen in the manifold again.

If the vacuum source can be controlled electronically, we could maintain pressure in the charge pipes for when the throttle is opened again without the compressor going into surge.

We have a full (unbuilt / untested) solution to the problem. My question is, even in autocross type situation where the immediate throttle response would be useful, would it be a reasonable modification to a standard BOV system?

We'll already be running MS, and have a second processor under the hood for other duties. So please, ignore time / money / development constraints.

Just test it, come back and report if its a reasonable modification.

Jeff_Ciesielski 09-28-2009 06:04 PM

For clarification: I assume you mean running a valve to maintain a preset maximum boost pressure in the pipes?

AlexO35 09-28-2009 06:19 PM

We'll probably build it and test it anyway, just trying to get other peoples thoughts ahead of time. Sometimes we get a little crazy on the conceptual ideas. Making sure this ones not too over the top.

Correct. We'll maintain whatever charge pipe pressure possible w/o compressor surge. Not necessarily a preset number. If that pressure is exceeded, the BOV will open.

Is your name Lazzer?

Cause of the ghetto DIY build? Or does he do needless gadgets too?

He had a thread back in the olden days about an electronic BOV. I think the thread was purged, but he has since been unbanned and may be able to help you out.

AlexO35 09-28-2009 07:09 PM

So what was the verdict?

Don't know, I am pretty sure he got it working but can not remember.

Techsalvager 09-28-2009 07:49 PM

I know this maybe weird or different but my idea was instead of using a bov, is to the place the TB infront of the turbo intake and not run a bov.
This is reminesint of the F1 turbo days

If I were going to run a bov though I'd get this http://www.rx7store.net/product_p/sy...ff%20valve.htm
Mainly because their marketing and ideas won me over and so far it seems everyone is happy with it.

iirc my mkv GTI has an electronic diverter valve in it.

same thing.

I want an electronic wastegate, not BOV

How much do you want one?

neogenesis2004 09-28-2009 10:12 PM

Gonna need some solenoids that can handle mad heat y0!

Don't turn into Corky with open ended replies. I fucking hate that.

Was sad back in the day when you guys drove Lazzer off... he was having fun coming up with stuff and actually creating it.

More than most do.
