Engine dies on acceleration

1994 Mazda Miata Turbo running stock ECU, stock MAF, BEGI FMU, Fuel Pump, 8 psi, FMIC, T3 turbo.

Car was working fine until recently where it stalled and had to be towed home.

Car starts fine, but immediately dies when it is revved to mid to high rpms, idle seems to be relatively fine.

No smoke coming from the muffler, no oils or fluids in engine bay.

Any ideas?

Yeah, your car has aids and runs appropriately.

pdexta 11-22-2015 07:16 PM

I would think it's something electrical. Have you changed anything recently? Check your battery to make sure you've got a good/clean connection on both terminals. Check your CAS to make sure the clip isn't loose and make sure your grounds are all good.

Not sure how much help that'll be, but at least it's something constructive.

Fix the coupler you blew off.

Sounds like a massive air leak between the turbo and throttle body.

mazdaaz3 12-07-2015 11:28 AM

The issue was the MAF, i tried my MAF on a normal NA Miata and saw the same problem. Swapped on a different MAF and everything is back to normal.

Braineack 12-07-2015 11:32 AM

that was your excuse to buy a MS and remove it altogether.

mazdaaz3 12-07-2015 01:18 PM

Actually Braineack, I am going to follow the advice of the guys on here and switch to a Megasquirt setup early next year.

Any advice regarding the setup I should go with in terms of injectors, version of megasquirt, additional add-ons.

MS3, GT500 injectors.

Clarification: Make that MS3 with MS3X.

Not really. Any ms3 will work. Ms3basic or mspnppro will be easier.

Braineack 12-08-2015 10:32 AM

why would a ms3basic be easier? because someone else made it? What if I made him a MS3x? would it not be jsut as easy?

you realize a ms3basic is ( for all intents) a MS3x right?

If all one has to do is plug it in, run a vacuum line, and sync the timing on the exact same firmware and software, how could one be easier than the other?

Did not realize you were still making ms3/3x. When I hear ms3/3x I assume homemade.

Yes, brain i know Ms3basic is functionally the same.

My initial suggestion was get an MS3. Which really means pick one of the variants of plug and play MS3 based ECUs. I'm not suggesting anymore than that. The noobs can do their own research.

get off my back bro.

Braineack 12-08-2015 10:53 AM

honestly, they shouldnt sell the MS3 kit without the expander board...

unless youre a masochist.

If you only need basic functionality and are an electronics nut, who owns a soldering station, with drawers of 2n2222's and other components laying around, its really not bad.

Anyone else should just get the X.

Braineack 12-11-2015 07:05 AM

without the expander board you have to build a circuit for:

Injector C out
Injector D out
A/C switch In
VSS In
Cam In
Tach Out
Boost Control Out
VICs Out
Alternator Field Out
VVT Out
A/C Fan Out
A/C Compressor Out
(assuming you put cooling fan, and Spark A and Spark B on the 3 LED outputs)

in pretty much the least. This doesn't even include Spark C out and Spark D out and other inputs and outputs one might use.

But you know, building 8-10 or so custom circuits, it's not really bad -- much easier than plugging in a ribbon cable.

I'll never ever, ever, again, ever, build a MS3 without the expander. Building a MS3x consists of having to solder (1), read: one, extra wire on the board to have full functionality. Without, you'll need to buy a custom breadboard and pretty much replicate the expander board in order to have "basic functionality". There isnt even enough ports on the mainboard itself to handle all the above and youll have to solder directly into the ms3 daughterboard itself, or install your own expanderlike ribbon header...

But let's keep arguing with the person who's built close to (100) MS3x units alone...

You decided to get but hurt so quick, my sarcasm went right over your head :giggle:
