F1 Stage 3 clutches, 1.6 Vs 1.8

My Miata is a 1.6 and the clutch is due a change for something more beefy. I've decided on the F1 stage 3 clutch. Thing is they do one for both the 1.6 flywheel and 1.8, both have the same hp ratings according to there ebay ads.

"Engine power must not exceed 270 bhp & 258 ft/lbs"

Surely the larger clutch on the larger 1.8 flywheel will hold more power than the smaller clutch on the smaller 1.6 flywheel?

Being my plan is to keep the car and keep tuning I want to future proof as much as I can. But if theres no extra benefit from upgrading to a 1.8 fly and 1.8 Stage 3 clutch I'll order the £5 cheaper 1.6 clutch :-)

Any advise?

if you would of searched some you would of found some good answers.

they are decent clutches for the money but do not hold what they say.

But i just bought a stage 3 for my 2001 car. and when i turbo i will most likely find its limits easy.

But also i think that the 1.8 would hold more than the 1.6 but the 1.6 is normally a lighter set up in oem form. But do you want. But if you upgrade to the 1.8 now with a good flywheel then you can have a better clutch choice in the future if you decide to add more power later.

Beer sunk in and I've now purchased a £25 1.8 flywheel and £180 stage 3 clutch. Should do the trick :-)

Good luck producing 260rwtq out of your stock 1.6l block.

I have been running the 1.6 version of this clutch for probably 20k miles under boost and so far so good. I think that if I were close to the advertised limits - like 240 ft-lbs, then I might worry a bit because who knows how accurate an ebay ad is going to be on torque limitations, but I don't plan on that happening. Like brain said, on a 1.6 that's really a non-issue anyways. I think it was probably a wise choice to go with the 1.8, as it logically makes sense that it will be able to handle even a bit more despite the seller not knowing so.
