Few autoX vids of the Miotta.

So I finally got enough done to the car that it was autox...able. So I took it to a test and tune yesterday.

http://i295.photobucket.com/albums/m...ox/autox19.jpg
http://i295.photobucket.com/albums/m...ox/autox15.jpg

It was very fun to drive... a serious handful... but fun.
Of note...
4k+rpm vibration... still there (can't hear it in video though :( )
195 rt615s are NOT enough tire
I shouldn't be lazy and work harder on tire pressures
springs are too soft for my taste (coilovers in the mail)

I was about 4 seconds off FTD... and there were stock miatas on Rcomps faster than me.
Also realize... its the 2nd time I've ever pushed/driven hard a rwd car... the last time was 1.5yrs ago... and it was 100% stock :p

Anyways... as i said...it is a handful.

Without further ado... here is my last and "best" run
http://video.google.com/videoplay?do...07397870&hl=en

Here are the rest of them 3-9 (1/2 i hit wrong button on camera... dnfs anyways :p, 4 is also a dnf)
run 3 - http://video.google.com/videoplay?do...56140179&hl=en
run 4 - http://video.google.com/videoplay?do...47960876&hl=en
run 5 - http://video.google.com/videoplay?do...90658658&hl=en
run 6 - (never knew my voice sounded so aweful on video...) http://video.google.com/videoplay?do...87822258&hl=en
run 7 - http://video.google.com/videoplay?do...38856963&hl=en (up soon, google is slow)
run 8 - http://video.google.com/videoplay?do...95832016&hl=en
run 9 - http://video.google.com/videoplay?do...88542177&hl=en

Enjoy the first run out in the car. It didn't explode or burn or smoke... so it is almost a 100% success... 100% would have been it handling like I want... and having traction... and not vibrating above 4k rpm :p

Good footage, I need to get a camera.

Chris Swearingen 05-19-2008 04:50 PM

COOL, there can never be enough SM2 miatas.

Here a a few of mine http://www.youtube.com/results?searc...2&search_type=

UrbanSoot 05-19-2008 04:57 PM

good god there are a lot of holes in your car!

Splitime 05-19-2008 05:07 PM

only uh 10 more than factory.... oh wait... hardtop vent....11 holes

Not sure i'd be classed in sm2 :p I suspect my vmount and lack of other crap tosses me into d-mod or something else silly like that. I'm not an autox'r though... i just need a place to test/debug/learn a bit before I get out on open track.

cueball1 05-19-2008 05:35 PM

I'm counting at least 13 if you count the TSI's

Nah, those are factory holes.

UrbanSoot 05-19-2008 05:40 PM

why did you vent rear bumper again?

To each his own, I would bet on SM2 though. Unless you took out the interior, the v-mount itself doesn't exclude you nor do the holes.

I thought chassis modification would void sm2? It has the front bumper support cut out and tubular rollbar frame built below for the radiator mount. It is also a gutted dash.

Bumpers are parachutes. I poked holes in the parachute.

Good way to put it, I want to do that too

Cut bumper support and gutted dash bump you out of SM2. My guess would be XP. Not a fun place to be on street tires for sure.

I was wondering why your bumper cover hole looked so much bigger and cleaner than what I was able to do. Oh well.

Any empirical testing on the ventilated rear bumper cover? I melted the side of my current one running without the muffler on. I have a replacement that is more open, but haven't gotten around to putting it on yet. I do have a hole saw and am not afraid to use it. Anything I should watch out for?

Quinn 05-20-2008 10:28 AM

I think that the car has to weigh over 2000 lbs to be in SM2.

I should weigh over 2k. It takes quite a bit to get a miata under 2k from my understanding.

No personal data on the bumper. Other than on drag cars... a lack of bumper or a holed bumper will see gains in trap speed due to the reduced drag.
That was enough for me. Plus I got the diffuser dress up plate in a trade... and figured why not :p

Yah, I'd be in one of the crazy classes. Thankfully I'm not an AutoX'r :)

Question for you. Custom vented hood? How have those vent positions worked for you? I'm back to thinking about more hood venting on my car.
This format....

I've just noticed a VERY warm/hot hood... and I am still undertrayless...

You can see the heat waves rising off the header at slow speeds. Not sure how much flow you get at speed. I have only pulled it out of the garage with the new extraction vent installed so I don't have any idea how it will effect things.

Side note: a 1.8L forced induction SM2 car must weigh 2247.8 lbs. Depending on how much fuel load I carry I am right there.

2247.8 lbs
without driver?
curious, i don't think I way that much...

Chris Swearingen 05-20-2008 02:00 PM

Without driver.
1600 rear wheel drive starting weight + 200 times displacement in cc + 1400 cc for forced induction
1600 + 200(1.839+1.4) =2247.8

You should weigh your car, I bet you are close to that if not over. I did quite a bit of work to get there.

m2cupcar 05-20-2008 02:09 PM

I bet you're close to 2k lbs. My ITA Miata weight 2080lbs without trying to remove anything crazy. And that was with a full cage and hardtop (no softtop).

Splitime 05-20-2008 02:16 PM

I love how off topic this thread went :)

Good stuff though :)

Who started this thread anyway? They should have known we wanted to talk about holes and weights ....

Back on topic.

What spring rates are you going to? There did seem to be quite a bit of body roll. On track it won't be as pronounced as the autocross since the transitions are usually smoother.
Also, what was the rattling? Sounded almost like you had something loose in the trunk.

Ooops, didn't see this post.

I'm on a Koni Cupkit suspension off an NB. So NB tophats, and springs meant for an NB. Unsure of rates... soft is all I can say :p. I also had the shocks revalved to SPSS3 spec... so I'm all set for higher rates.

I do have a set of coilover sleeves enroute, with 12k/6k rates. Should give me a bias of about 300 higher in front vs rear.
Has an FM front bar and no rear bar.

Also, just got a fresh alignment... at the AutoX the last alignment it was on SUCKED.... -.7camber front and -1.7camber rear.

I just got done redoing it at another Firestone I like more....
F: -2.4camber, 0 toe
R: -2.1camber, 0 toe

Should be MUCH better. I'll also be going out on 225 RA1s next time... no more fooling around on tires too small for the car to get grip with.

Loki047 05-26-2008 10:21 AM

Who held the event?

hell my 99 sport with hartop on (and a/c) and me (158) was 2533lbs

so about 2325

ApexOnYou 05-26-2008 12:06 PM

Splitime where was that at? Was it with WCMC?

mike_671 05-26-2008 12:43 PM

Splitime your car looks like its got a lot of torque there.

Splitime 05-26-2008 01:49 PM

It was with Windy City Miata Club as Apex guessed. It was up in grayslake, il at College of Lake County.

They have an event on the 1st... but there is another club holding one closer to me... so I'm torn. I know more people going to the local one... but they get larger turn outs so I might get less runs.

I suspect... I might head to the WCMC one at CLC on June 1st... just to run with a smaller group that has more miatas.

Chicago folks should come out... seriously. Its worth the drive upto Grayslake to get out and drive the car hard.

Loki047 05-26-2008 09:12 PM

Let me drive your car.

Splitime 05-26-2008 09:20 PM

Yeah.... no.
