(First Post) Trying to eBay Turbo on a Stock 1.8

Hello all, new to this forum, but I am getting a 1999 NB here in the next few days, has a stock 1.8 and 5-speed. That or a 2001 NB with a 6-speed, I'm not decided on which one yet (the 2001 has a lot more miles). My plan from the get go is to turbo this car. I won't go into detail about all my plans for the car but it's mainly gonna be a drift car that I daily, this thread is mainly just on the turbo set up.

I have several questions, hopefully those of you that have had a lot more experience with turbos on these cars will help me understand.

Here is what I have so far in terms of components:

Turbo: https://www.ebay.com/itm/GT35-T3-Turbo-Charger-Anti-Surge-500-HP-Oil-Fitting-Complete-Accessories-Kit/121145654988?epid=672375197&hash=item1c34d7fecc:g: VtsAAOxy4dNS1gOO&vxp=mtr
- GT35 T3 Turbo
- 6-25 psi working pressure
- .70 A/R Compressor
- .63 A/R Turbine
- 61.3/82mm Compressor Wheel
- 62/67.8mm Turbine Wheel
- Anti Surge (which I'm sure isn't going to be a problem on an engine this small), comes with Oil Fittings, Restrictor, Oil Return flange, 3" V-Band Exhaust Adapter, Water Fittings

ECU: https://www.diyautotune.com/product/...-manual-trans/
- MegasquirtPNP Gen2 for the 1999-2000 Miata (will get a different one if I get the 2001 Miata instead).
- I will also buy the IAT sensor and tap that into the intercooler piping.
- Will probably pair this with a Racepak IQ3 digital dash. I've been told it is plug and play so long that I purchase the correct harness adapter.

Intercooler: https://www.ebay.com/itm/27-Inch-Turbo-Intercooler-2-5-Aluminum-Piping-Silicone-Hose-Kit-Black-Red/162349012579?hash=item25ccc15663:g:B-oAAOSw9GhYbehv&vxp=mtr
- 27" Intercooler. 2.5" Piping. I know it will take some work to fit it but I have all the welding equipment and stuff if the need arises.

Injectors: https://www.ebay.com/itm/GENUINE-OEM-Mazda-04-08-RX-8-Denso-Yellow-Fuel-Injectors-195500-4450/291737322302?hash=item43ece6433e:g:52gAAOSw8W5aXu~ e&vxp=mtr
- I was told RX8 injectors would be big enough, if not these then I've seen Deutsche Werks 700cc injectors work before. I know for sure that the RX8 injectors are completely compatible with the 1.8's fuel rails and wiring harness.

Wideband: https://www.flyinmiata.com/aem-gauge-wideband-kit.html
- I decided on a genuine AEM wideband, might as well get a good one if it's not the most expensive thing to buy. I don't know if it will have compatibility issues with the Megasquirt so let me know.

Turbo Manifold/Exhaust:
- I'm actually going to be doing this myself, I can get lots of various bends and the proper flanges. Like I mentioned before I can weld up pretty much anything so if I can save money here by doing it myself I will. I plan on having a hood dump for the exhaust, so just a 3" 90 degree bend out the hood, and keeping the stock exhaust for state inspections and what not.

Fuel Pump: I've read that I need to upgrade the fuel pump to keep up with the bigger injectors, not sure which one but I've been told Walbro makes some that people generally go for. I'm just not sure which model I need.

Now onto my questions:

1. Will that turbo work or will it be too large for the motor? I am going to use stock internals, as much as I want to drop in forged Wiseco pistons and Manley H-Beam rods I can't afford that. How much boost is safe on the stock 1.8 internals and will this turbo provide that boost pressure without taking forever to spool?
2. How much power will the stock 5-speed trans and rear end handle? And what about the 6-speed if I end up with the other car?
3. And how much RWHP would you predict with this setup, all things considered like the motor strength, transmission, rear end, etc.?

Edit: I should mention the fact that this is a BUDGET build. I know it will be quite a long process to get this working well but I'm willing to put in the work needed to save money.

Oh I forgot to add, I won't be using a BOV of any kind, I know it will make the turbo's lifespan a lot shorter but a $260 part is worth the SUTUTUTUTU's!! XD

You're about to have a bad time.

Why is that? I know the turbo is shit but at least I'm getting a good standalone ECU and all.

The turbo is way to big. It will suck on a stock motor. Spend a little extra and get a MS3PNP-Pro. You can get a wideband off Amazon for way cheaper then FM. Don't get ebay RX8 injectors, most are crappy Chinese knockoffs. Get Flow Force injectors.

What size turbo do I get then? What are the advantages of the MS3PNP-Pro over the PNP Gen2? And what size injectors?

Look up mkturbo.com look at the mk turbo group buy/build thread learn, then order from him, profit and win. He actually already posted in your thread

The stock motors generally pop around 240wtq, which is pretty easy to hit with even a small turbo.

Go for a vf39/vf43 subaru turbo. 300 bucks used, easily can max out the engine, and spool well.

ElyasWolff 01-20-2018 10:40 PM

Buy these injectors. Flow Force Miata 640cc Injector Kit - NA/NB ? Flow Force Injectors Google EV14 injectors.
There are some helpful stickies here in the forum. Do allot of searching then buy parts. Then do more searching. There is not much patience here for people that dont do searches, ask me how I know.

I love it when clueless morons ask the dumbest questions after sharing a crappy plan with us that they thought was gonna impress us. But then, the's "a drifter" so it all makes complete sense.

Well excuse me...

I may be new to Miatas but I still have plenty of experience working on all sorts of different cars. My plan isn't that crappy, sure I may have chosen a couple wrong parts but that's why I posted to the forum for help. Honestly I hate these forums, all it is people complaining about someone else's choices and never inputting anything that will actually help them, much like your post. It ends up filling the entire thread and no one gets anywhere.

Lighten up dude, cars are fun, learning is fun.

Thanks for the help, I will change that in my parts list. How much boost will I be running for 240WTQ?

I am learning, I've already made a lot of changes to this part list. Like I said before, I don't see the need for comments like this, all they do is clutter up the thread and create a bad atmosphere.

And I don't want to be rude but I expected the moderator to have a better attitude.

Sorry you dont like the reception, but mtnet isnt big on drifters. Most everyone here is either a street driver looking to have more fun, or a track rat. The miata isnt the greatest platform for skidding anyhow.

And honestly, getting made fun of by a mod is par for existing on this forum. If you dont like it or are offended by it, you can lurk threads and ask more educated questions. Good luck on your hood dumped, home fabbed drift daily miata, honestly

soot 01-21-2018 03:20 PM

The fact that you haven't already seen at least 30 threads almost identical to this get shit on by the mods means that you haven't reach much on the forum.

There's a lot of info here man. Just spend some time reading and you can find a list of cheap build "buy this not that" components with links to ebay and everything. Safe power levels for the engine and trans have been documented and repeated over and over. The only reason you're getting this reception is because you haven't researched. If you can get past that, then welcome to MT.net

Miatas make very poor drift cars because they have an extremely low polar moment of inertia. It is one of the things that makes them very good road race cars but it also makes them very poor at holding a drift angle. You will be schooled by people with more appropriately designed cars for that task even if they have significantly less talent. 240s, RX-7s, RX-8s, Mustangs, Camaros, GTOs, and 350Zs are much better choices for drifting. What you're talking about is the equivalent of taking a minivan to an autocross or a track day. Sure, you can go around the track but you'll never be a winner and everybody's going to shake their head or point and laugh.

You've done extraordinarily poor job of researching this endeavor. There is nothing wrong with the eBay turbo intrinsically. It is very much the wrong size but probably is not a bad unit on the right engine. You stated that you didn't think it was going to need the surge housing but a turbo that is too large on an engine that is too small would need the surge housing far more than the appropriately-sized turbo would need it.

Everyone on this forum knows that the RX8 injectors on eBay are garbage knock-offs. A little searching will open that up to you.

There's a huge difference between the MS2 and the ms3 in idle and available settings but the prices are fairly close.

You've neglected to budget for clutch which will be necessary prior to the turbo install. I recommend researching a bit here so that you don't have to buy two of them.

I don't see that you've included a coolant reroute kit or a larger radiator and you made no mention of upgrading the ignition coils to handle the boost.

There are some specific differences and possibly important financial benefits regarding the choice between 5-speed and 6-speed transmissions that you should educate yourself on as well.

I advise you to research thoroughly before proceeding. I wish you no harm but there are pitfalls all around you and you will need to navigate carefully. You need to build this car properly so that when you destroy it trying to drift it you will have the appropriate parts to sell and not be saddled with a bunch of useless garbage.

18psi 01-22-2018 11:24 AM

Yeah, shooter wants to pick up nicer parts from the part out, no need for junk :D
