Funny the difference 2 degrees of static timing advance makes...

Currently my 1999 10th Anniversary is running 7-8psi out of my Mazdaspeed Miata turbo kit. Well I was running 6 degrees BTDC, but now I advance it two degrees. Wow! Went for a test drive and did several redline runs in 4th gear, no problem with predetonation. (It was 70 degrees outside) But you can definitely feel a power increase by retarding only two degrees of static timing vs four degrees.

The little MSM IHI turbo setup does the job. Heck 170 rwhp is all care for, anything else and it gets way way too expensive...

2* of advance picked up 10wtq or so at 4k/15psi in my car. More spark = more torque

170whp is kinda pussy though man.

predetonation is not a word...pre-ignition or more correctly, detonation is what you were looking for ;)

LOL just imagine how nice no retard is man.

Well I used to have a 97 Miata with MSPNP and a Series 3 BEGI GT2860RS Turbo setup, so i'm not entirely new to this. Given it was fast, i'm not ready to shell out another 4,000 dollars for a fast ass stand-alone turbo system... I am very well pleased with what I have right now though :)

For less than 900 dollars, I am running a 170rwhp MSM setup. At this horsepower, I don't even have to replace my stock clutch that has 49,000 miles of use on it. It's more of a matter of cost than power for me. 900 dollars got me a great running turbo system which included a brand new IHI turbocharger on top of that. It's pretty affordable to turbo a Miata...up to 8psi, then cost starts going through the roof. I did the 305cc injector swap, didn't do much of nothing since timing is my limiting factor. (I can only retard 4 degrees max) So, pretty much if I want to run anything over 200 rwhp, then i'll have to be prepared to spend anywhere from 1,500 to 2,500 dollars in engine management such as Xede or Hydra, as well as purchase a stronger clutch, and a LC-1 wideband if I get were to buy the Xede.`

Best thing about this Mazdaspeed swap into my 99 10th Anniversary is this, I bypassed the shitty 04/05 MSM ECU and its boost control solenoid. The IHI turbocharger that I have is wastegated at 7-8 psi and it holds steadily with no boost creep, plus I got a 7200 RPM rev limiter and a 99-2000 ecu thats much much easier to work with.

So far i'm really impressed with the driviability. I haven't had any problems with the factory recirculating bypass valve. (it seems to be an issue with alot of MSM's) and the use of a t-bolt clamp puts an end to the notorious throttle inlet blowoff) Flyin Miata's Voodoo Box with 2 degrees of static retard works awesome with my kit. True, I might not have programmable timing, but considering my fuel management and slotted timing wheel cost only 195 dollars, it was a good compromise that saved me alot of money. :)

I paid 260 for a new turbo, I paid 225 for all the chargepipes, inlet pieces, bypass valve, manifold, outlet, of which I sold the factory intercooler and assorted pieces for 60 dollars and used that to buy a 28x7x2.5 intercooler. Then the voodoo box was 195... Yeah I came out cheap :) It was around 800 dollars... I love it! You can barely hear the turbo and the obnoxious woosh sound of a bypass valve is almost inexistent...

BS WI is your freind cody, jack that timming up to 11 and drop the bulky ass heatsink in front of your radiator.

when you can lay stripes in 3rd (4th in my 6-speed) then it doesn't matter what noise comes out. You get to stand up to make #1.

You've got a point Cody, you've probably got the most nag for the buck setup. Some folks just have a LOT more bang.

I had to spend twice what you did to get 2 more psi, but of course and ready to up it, would just need a larger compressor (my turbo is a tiny IHI as well).

Hustler has probably spent well over twice again that...but he could run as much boost as both of us combined if he wanted.

My car is very enjoyable, but I already wanna crank that shit up!

Crank that shit up!!!
