Garrett turbo ID
So as you can probably tell from my name, I am looking to put together a DIY turbo for my 90 1.6 and trying to do so on as strict a budget as I can without making too many compromises.
With that all said, I’m working on my MS3/x as step one, but while I’m doing that I’m trying to source other parts. So I came across this turbo for sale locally for what seems to be a good price ($350, negotiable), but I’m not sure its what I need. Been doing a lot of research and still cant quite figure out if this is the GT28R I’m looking for. If anybody can ID off pics, I would apprciate the help. Wrong turbo for a 1.6.

Thanks, guess I’ll keep reading up and looking. |
I'd look for a 2554 or SR20 turbo (nearly the same). They fit FM's DIY turbo manifold/dp kit, and spool great on the 1.6. I haven't tried a 2560 with a 1.6, so I'd be hesitant to even suggest that. IIRC when I had my 1.6 sr20 setup, I was on par with spool plots from 1.8/2560 setups, to give you an idea.
IMO too big of a turbo quickly turns what's supposed to be an amazing car into a dyno queen/waste of money. Not to mention I don't think that turbo is standard t25, so you'd be building a custom manifold and downpipe to fit it, breaking rule #1, never build a setup around a turbo. |
I appreciate the pointer in the right direction. So I have a follow up question about something I’m running in to: locally I find several turbos for sale (craigslist, offerup etc) but people selling them don’t know model numbers or types, only what’s written on the side. So I have been searching the forums and google trying to find a resource on how to visually ID them with no luck. Is there a place that I can go to start learning to ID what to look for? |
If they can't tell you what the turbo specs are, you don't want the turbo.

If you can't afford a $300 turbo, you can't afford to turbocharge your toothbrush, much less a car. If it is your only car, you are about $2500 away from getting ready to buy the parts to turbo, which will be another $2500-up minimum. I say this because you will need to pick up a second beater car to drive while yours is being built. Not even kidding. |

Perhaps, but this is something you can/should plan for.

It’s a project car so I’m good on that level. Or maybe it is the bourbon. |

Try to find a journal bearing 2554 from a SR20DET on facebook or craigslist. I couldn't find any in my area so I sprung for a legit 2554r, which I felt stupid about at first, but then again I spent on a turbocharger instead of $500 on a 1.8 swap so I might as well just own my stupidity
