Turbo usable
Yo bros,
Is this compressor wheel usable? I get the feeling the answer is "no", and that it was damaged during transit.

Those fins weren't bent in transit. They are all bent in a fairly uniform manner, indicating that something probably got wedged between the wheel and housing as the turbo was spinning. Although for the fins to be bent the direction they are, the wheel would probably be spinning in the opposite direction in would when installed in the car. Whatever happened, it doesn't look like shipping damage to me. Get your money back.

The shaft play is within spec (On the loose end, granted, but it's within spec), and that's the only major red flag I saw on a brief visual inspection other than needing new turbine clamp plates, which are no big deal.

1) Throw in a new compressor wheel and exhaust clamps, say ---- it to balancing, run it 'till something goes wrong.
2) Throw in a brand new CHRA. This option, at my CHRA cost, will still put it over $200 cheaper than a new one.

I'm good with either. $150 for a 2560, or massive turbo carnage ftmfw. 'Cause I don't give a ---- about the 1.6 I have either, so ---- it. Nothing that I give a damn about can be hurt in this experiment.

After researching the topic, ---- it. I'm on board with this. Let's see how long it lasts. I'll be certain to post updates in this thread, so STAY TUNED FOR either MASSIVE TURBO WIN or MASSIVE TURBO CARNAGE.

And before I head over to Europe, I figured I'd leave one last tidbit.
I've just confirmed that most mid-frame garretts (T2s and T3s) are component balanced.
This means that there is no need to worry about the compressor wheel's balance with respect to the rest of the rotating assembly as the compressor wheel is balanced against itself. However, it is necessary to index the compressor nut against the shaft and encertain that you get it back to the proper position, as that part is a balanced assembly (compressor nut to turbine wheel).
Translation: I'm effing golden. Thanks guys.

One fin (right side top on ur pic) is bent/ripped one way, the other is bent the other way... almost as if the piece got wedged and instantly stopped the wheel which then sprung back and damaged the fin behind it the other way. At this point i wouldnt be surprised if the center shaft is twisted and bent.

Hey guys that the snail I posted for sale. The turbo was never put into use. It has been in storage in my garage for a long time. The pictures that I posted in the for sale thread were taken soon after the seller showed interest in purchasing the turbo. The box in which the turbo was stored, to my knowledge, was never dropped, hit, or wedged by or against something. I disclosed that the turbo had a damaged plate and did not intentionally withheld information regarding any further damage.

Granted, the fins look straight in buffoon's FS thread. Sure, it is possible that it was somehow damaged in transit, but people ship turbos all the time without managing to ---- up the wheels like that. The wheel should be quite securely protected by the compressor housing from any foreign objects banging into it. Did the packing material consist of a random assortment of bolts? Was the housing not attached, leaving the wheel naked? Was the housing secured only loosely, leaving it free to whack against the wheel when the box got jostled? Since you're obviously convinced it is shipping damage, you tell me what hit the wheel during transit and how. Or don't. If you're happy just replacing the wheel and running it, great. It's not like you paid a lot for it.
I don't troll about mechanical stuff or megasquirt issues. Or at least when I do, I make it obvious enough to leave no doubt.

The turbo was heavily wrapped in bubbled sheets. The compressor was only placed on top of the inducer as I did not have the bolts and then secured as tight as possible and placed into the box for shipping. Thus, my "SOLD AS-IS" disclosure on the FS thread, before the agreement for purchase was made. This is a pic of the shipped item.
I did not advertise this item as a "mint" condition turbo. I listed the damage that I was aware of, and listed pictures of the current state of the item as well.
